I am a National Merit Scholar with a BA in Economics and an MA in International Development. I have many hours experience tutoring students who are preparing for standardized tests, including the SAT, GRE, ACT, SSAT and PSAT/NMSQT. I earned my TOEFL certification in October 2014 so that I can lead classes for English Language Learners, and will begin a PhD program in Fall 2015 focusing on Multilingual Education. I am a long-time freelance writer, with experience working for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Russia and throughout Eastern Europe. During one-on-one tutoring sessions, my focus is on integrating the subject matter with the current interests of the student, thereby making the learning process interesting so that the material will be easy to remember. I also coach students on effective time management and study planning. I am a National Merit Scholar with a BA in Economics and an MA in International Development. Ruth is an outstanding tutor. Extremely well organized, very enthusiastic, and has an excellent study plan for the SAT. We are very pleased with her!
Ruth has been working with my 11 year old son and 16 year old daughter since August 2013. They are meeting school and testing challenges much better. It's been an excellent experience; we're grateful.
My daughter is learning a lot from Ruth. We are so glad that we got someone like Ruth who really understands geometry and how to teach it. Each time, my daughter feels she is grasping this difficult subject a little better.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied Economics and International Development at American University in Washington, DC, writing my Masters thesis on the need for improved Environmental Impact Assessments conducted by the World Bank and International Development Banks. I went on to work for the United States Agency for International Development in the Office of Environment and Urban Development and later in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia.
I have been working with both K-12 and adult English language learners from around the world, and have many hours of experience assisting students in improving their writing, speaking, and understanding of English. I earned my TESOL in October 2014 so that I am now certified to teach classes, but find that working with students one-on-one yields the most rapid progress.
As I am preparing to enter a PhD program in 2015, I took the GRE for the second time in September 2014. I achieved a perfect score of 170 (99th percentile) on the GRE Verbal, and reached the 71st percentile in GRE Quantitative and 80th percentile in GRE Writing. I am very familiar with the format of the GRE questions, and can help each student to focus in on his or her strengths, and review those areas that many students find most challenging.
I have experience taking Praxis tests, and can work with other aspiring teachers to improve their test preparation skills. I scored a 183 on the Social Studies: Content Knowledge exam in July 2013 (out of a possible range of 100-200). Average scores are in the 158-177 range.
As a high school student, I participated in Debate Club and Model United Nations. After completing my Masters degree, I joined the Toastmasters International Club to improve my public speaking skills. I was a member of the U.S. Delegation to Habitat II, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, held in Istanbul in 1996. Not only can I help students to prepare and be comfortable when preparing for a public speaking engagement, I can help coach them on connecting with the audience, maintaining a good cadence and eye contact, and employing humor when appropriate to regain composure.
I studied Russian language and culture as an undergraduate student at American University in Washington, DC. I experienced life in the then Soviet Union through an immersion program traveling to Moscow and St. Petersburg during my semester abroad. After earning my M.A. in International Development, I had an opportunity to return to Russia as a contractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development.
I tutor students from grade school to graduate school, and I have found that each and every person benefits from coaching on planning and time management. Although each individual learns differently and faces a wide variety of challenges when tackling a new subject, basic time management and study skills help the student to overcome those challenges one step at a time. Many students are struggling because they are overwhelmed by increasing amounts of homework as they grow older. While some teachers DO assign too much homework, each student can learn to approach every task more efficiently and productively. I help students to look ahead in their schedules and strategically organize their time, so that they can complete their homework assignments, and approach each test feeling fully prepared, well-rested and confident.
