Hello, prospective students and parents!

Who am I?
I am a 2013 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of a top ten liberal arts college. During my undergraduate career, I studied International Relations, and my coursework included classes in writing, literature, philosophy, psychology, government, history, foreign language (Arabic/French), and other disciplines. I have had extensive experience in research, writing, editing, public speaking, and communications. I have a diverse array of communications-related accomplishments: a publication in a legal journal, a position as Managing Editor of my college newspaper, and a stint in the Communications Department of a leading non-profit organization, just to name a few. I have also had experience teaching and working with students as a camp counselor, a tutor, and a Writing Consultant at my college's Center for Writing and Public Discourse. Most importantly, I am a flexible, creative, organized, and forward-thinking individual who is not afraid to take risks and encourage others to do the same.

What are my methods?
I have the rare (and somewhat embarrassing) qualification of having taken the PSAT twice, the SAT three times (2270 cumulative score), the ACT once, as well as three SAT II Subject Tests (French, Biology, and Literature). Having received tutoring in a variety of group and one-on-one settings for all of the aforementioned tests, I know which methods work. I have devised a unique method for tutoring reading and writing, both for students preparing for the SAT and for those who simply seek improvement in their English language skills. My methods include long-term vocabulary retention, writing self-improvement, and taking tests under timed conditions, and they are highly personalized to reflect each student's individual learning style and preferences.

If you seek a personable and experienced reading/writing tutor, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken Advanced, Honors, and AP level math courses in Prealgebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. I have successfully tutored Algebra I at the Advanced level, with the student achieving notable improvement as a result of my services. My math tutoring methods involve explanations via diagrams, extensive practice problems, and taking tests under timed conditions.

Arabic

I am qualified to tutor Arabic because I have studied the language for 4+ years in a variety of settings both in the U.S. and in the Arab world. My first exposure to the Arabic language was during summer 2008 as a participant in the government-funded Startalk Arabic Language immersion program at Brigham Young University, where I earned college credit for the first semester of Arabic and equivalent cultural knowledge. I continued my study of Arabic at Claremont McKenna College, where I majored in Middle Eastern Studies and served as Co-President of the Arabic Club. My Arabic scholarship at Claremont McKenna included five semesters of Modern Standard Arabic, one semester of Modern Arabic Poetry, and one semester of Media Arabic. I also spent eight weeks in Jordan, where I studied Jordanian Arabic, and five months in Morocco, where I studied Modern Standard and Moroccan Arabic. Overall, I feel as if I have obtained intermediate proficiency in the language, and I would feel comfortable tutoring a beginning level student.

College Counseling

As a self-employed college counselor, I have worked intensively with high school students throughout all stages of the college search and application process. Notably, I have provided highly personalized assistance in developing and finalizing college lists, researching schools and financial aid (merit and need-based), crafting powerful application materials, including personal statements and supplemental essays, and preparing for admission and scholarship interviews. In this capacity, I have applied my strong skills in research, writing, editing, and communications to make the college search and application process smoother for my students, and ultimately help them achieve success.

English

As a reader, writer, proofreader, and public speaker, I have a very strong understanding of the of the English language. This is evidenced by my scores of 4 on the AP English Literature Exam, 780 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT, and 800 on the Writing Section. I have taken numerous courses in Writing and Literature (Honors, AP, and college-level).

French

I have studied the French language for a total of seven years, including extensive coursework in grammar and literature. I have practiced my French language skills through living with a host family in both France and Morocco. As the recipient of a French language fellowship, I spent six months teaching the language to elementary school students and writing a magazine in French.

Government & Politics

I have had extensive experience engaging with U.S. and international government and politics. Notably, I took AP U.S. Government and Politics in high school and participated in Model United Nations and New Jersey Youth and Government. In college, I took classes in U.S. Politics, Comparative Politics, International Politics, International Development, Human Rights and Multiculturalism, Constitutional Law, U.S. Foreign Policy, and the Federal Budget. I wrote a nine-month long honors senior thesis on U.S. foreign policy and published a paper in an international law journal. I have also had real-life experience in the field, as an intern at the American Civil Liberties Union, the Obama campaign, Human Rights Watch, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Grammar

I have engaged with grammar as Managing Editor of my college newspaper, Communications Department Intern for a leading non-profit organization, and Writing Consultant at my college's Center for Writing and Public Discourse.

I have taken a number of Literature courses at the Honors and AP level, including British Literature, American Literature, AP Literature (4 on AP exam), and a college-level course on the comic voice. As a result of this coursework, I have a general understanding of literary trends, movements, and techniques. I have also taken Literature courses in French, Latin, and Arabic.

PSAT

A National Merit Scholar Commended Student, I took the PSAT twice and received group and one-on-one tutoring each time. Therefore, I know which PSAT tutoring methods are the most effective. My PSAT tutoring methods involve taking tests under timed conditions and teaching targeted "tricks" to make the test more approachable.
