Greetings. My name is Selah, and I am a certified educator in the DC metropolitan area. I have taught pre-K, adult learners, and all levels in between. Teaching in a variety of settings (including public and charter schools; homeschool co-ops; and detention centers) has taught me how to be flexible and responsive to the specific needs of my students. As a special educator, I recognize the importance of relationship building- students must feel comfortable and trust their tutor for ultimate success.
I currently teach developmental reading Prince George's Community College, as language arts and reading are my specialty. From phonetics to verbal test prep, I can assist you or your child to make exponential growth in their reading and writing abilities. In addition, I have taught mathematics to elementary, high school, and college students. Working one-on-one, or in small groups, I have found that students are able to let down their guard and release their fears about mathematics- and that is half the battle! Being organized, prepared, congenial, and perceptive are my strengths that make me the ideal tutor for you or your child.
I am a special educator (K-12) in DC and Maryland. I have extensive experience with ADD and ADHD- I worked at a youth detention center, where 80 percent of the population was identified with a special learning need; and 60% were identified as ADD or ADHD. In the public schools, I taught a self-contained special needs class; most of the students were identified as having an emotional (and/or behavioral) disorder and ADHD. I use research-based strategies in my tutoring, yet I have found consistency and organization are key for these learners, as they are easily distracted. Routines give these students structure, which gives them the foundation to be an independent learner.
I am a certified special educator, and I received my teaching instruction and Masters in the Art of Teaching from George Washington University. In addition, I am a Wilson trained reading instructor; this program is specifically geared towards students with dyslexia to re-train the brain to identify sound-symbol relationship patterns. I am familiar with most reading programs for dyslexia, covering both phonetics and comprehension. It is my goal for students to gain comfortability in the areas in which they struggle the most; thus, it is my duty, as the educator, to find the best possible means to ensure the students' success.
I am currently a certified K-12 educator in the DC area. I have taught and tutored elementary age students in both small and large groups. This includes in homeschool, public school, and after-school settings. My speciality is in reading and language arts, and I believe it is important to set the foundation for young people to be successful as teenagers and eventually, adults. Thus, I also teach study, organizational, and life skills to learners in grades kindergarten through sixth.
I have over five years' experience teaching math to elementary school students, particularly in after-school tutorial settings. I also provide math instruction to homeschool students. I recognize that young learners need visual and tactile aids to strengthen their understanding of mathematical concepts, all of which I have (base 10 blocks; Unifix cubes for basic arithmetic, etc.). Most importantly, I love to create and play math games to make the learning both fun and meaningful.
I am a Language Arts instructor and have been teaching language arts and reading for over seven years. I currently hold a Masters in the Art of Teaching from GWU, and my program focused on literacy for students with learning difficulties. I am highly qualified as an English instructor and greatly enjoy teaching young people how to find meaning in the text. Lastly, I have created and implemented curriculum for early childhood through adult learners.
My qualification for phonetic instruction is based from the training I received at George Washington University's "Literacy Cooperative" program, as well as through the Wilson Reading program (trained instructor). I have been teaching phonetics instruction for the past seven years; this is my speciality! I taught both elementary and high school students in the area of phonetics. I strongly emphasis phonetics with my students, as it is the foundation of being an independent reader. In addition, I create my own activities, worksheets, decodable readers, and manipulatives- so let's get ready to learn!
To receive my teaching credentials, I took both the Praxis I and two Praxis II subject tests. Thus, I have direct experience with studying for and taking the Praxis exam. In addition, I have provided test prep instruction to learners in a variety of settings, including high schools, community college, and a detention center. I recognize that many people experience test anxiety, and it is my goal to provide key points and tips to the student to ensure they approach the test with a clear and focused mind.
I am a certified special educator and reading/language arts instructor. I received my Masters in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T.) from George Washington University, as a cohort member of the Literacy Cooperative Program. I also am a trained Wilson Reading instructor, so I am able to provide phonetic-based reading remediation for learners of all ages. I also teach reading comprehension at Prince George's Community College, so I am able to work with adults as well. Lastly, my special education background provides me experience and first-hand knowledge of the various reading assessments, which are used to pinpoint specific reading/cognitive difficulties.
I have been a certified special educator (K-12, non-categorical) for the past five years. I began teaching students identified as having emotional and behavior disorders and attention-deficit disorder. After graduating from George Washington University with a master's in Special Education, I taught in DC Public schools and a charter school for students with special learning needs. My philosophy is that all students have strengths and weakness; as an educator, it is my role to determine how to best meet the needs of the learner (regardless of their educational background).
As a special education teacher and a community college instructor, I have had extensive experience providing instruction in study skills. I recognize that many students have the intellectual capability and the motivation and desire, but are often overwhelmed by today's academic demands and rigor. I show students specific and direct techniques for successfully taking tests, taking notes, reading critically, and most importantly, managing their time.
