My name is Carlene, from the beautiful island of Jamaica. I have been a teacher for the past 16 years. I have a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. The last three years of my teaching career are now being spent in Washington, DC where I am a Middle School teacher-5th through 8th grades. During those years in Jamaica, I received two awards for Teacher of the Year and played many roles. A few of them include: Assistant Principal; New Staff Mentor; Spelling Bee Coordinator/Coach; Grade Supervisor; and Athletic Coordinator. These roles have all helped me to see scholars at many levels and to identify their individual learning styles. My understanding of these qualities afforded me the opportunity to successfully tutor scholars.
Every scholar is given a diagnostic assessment to ascertain strengths and weaknesses. If possible, I usually request an observatory report from the present teacher. The results are used to plan the appropriate course of study for the scholar.
As a tutor, all scholars under my tutelage are guaranteed an academic improvement in six months or less. My motto-borrowed from the mission statement of the Ministry of Education in Jamaica-has always been, 'Every child can learn. Every child must learn.' Bearing this in mind and my knowledge of the learning stages of children, I incorporate the scholar's interests and prior knowledge to make connections to the lessons. For example, football plays can be used to teach geometry or slopes and the game of basketball can be used to introduce writing and vocabulary skills. As a result, trust is also being built and this encourages scholars to share openly.
Now that I am in a new environment, my principles have not changed. I also continue to tutor scholars with the same expected growth. I am proud that parents can all attest to the improvement seen in their children's growth. Of course, as education continues to change, I also have to make adjustments to my own knowledge by registering for courses, attending conferences and workshops. As I grow, my scholars grow as well.
I have successfully completed the Praxis 1 content area tests. I am presently a certified Jamaican teacher who has been teaching for the past 18 years and now a middle school (grades 6-8)teacher in a public charter school. I have tutored successfully by guaranteeing success in about three to six months. I have also successfully won STEM awards and currently a part of the DC Common Core Collaborative.
I have successfully completed the Praxis 1 content area tests. I have knowledge of the various techniques involved in comprehending content area subjects for examples, KWL and SQ3R. I have successfully taught scholars Math and note taking skills to help them effectively assess their own learning. I am also knowledgeable on the various sites that enhance learning and I also have paid access to online diagnostic/assessment programs that will further help scholars.
