The process of learning a foreign language is beautiful and it opens a whole new world: culture, ideas, interesting people... What is needed when learning a second language? Hard work, enthusiasm, motivation, and patience are very important. The beauty of tutoring is that the lesson can be personalized, adapted to what the student needs. Besides, teaching a modern language requires an authentic communicative setting. I can listen to what the student is saying and adapt my questions to his or her answers. As a native speaker, I can give the student real responses, the type of responses one receives when it is an authentic setting.
In my tutoring sessions, I have seen adults and younger students thrive because they can see that they are making progress. They take charge of their own learning because they see how much they are improving. Learning a foreign language requires studying grammar and vocabulary. However, they have to be studied in context. It is very discouraging to spend hours memorizing words and then not being able to use them in a conversation. That is why I believe that tutoring in a one-to-one setting is the ideal, because it resembles an authentic setting. In my sessions we practice grammar and vocabulary, but we communicate, we write and talk, we listen and we read in Spanish. Time goes fast because there is an exchange of ideas, it does not feel like a lesson, it is more a time spent chatting with a friend. At the same time, the progress is obvious because the student is able to say more and more things in the target language.
I have a teaching license from the Maryland State Department of Education. I am a certified public school teacher of both Latin and Spanish.
