In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Educational Background: As a high school student I was assigned to "Honors English" classes, and enjoyed learning analytical approaches to classic and contemporary literature. My Juris Doctorate degree required training in legal and technical writing, with an emphasis on logic, analysis and organization. My certification at the International Language Institute ("ILI" Washington DC) addressed teaching methods for the mechanics of writing, including grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary, as well as methods for teaching the sequential steps of the writing process itself.
Tutoring and Teaching Experience: While at ILI, as part of my training I tutored a high school and a college student in the organization and mechanics required for different writing tasks. Tasks ranged from a film review for "The King's Speech" to writing email responses to housing ads. I have a year of full time substitute teaching at both elementary and high school levels, and, (much) more recently, two years of part time volunteer ESL teaching and tutoring high school students as well as adults.
Tutoring Methods for Writing: I tailor the tasks and the approach to the needs, wants and goals of the student. Accordingly, the learning tasks tend to be relevant to what the student needs to do at school or at work. I seek to instill confidence in writing by introducing structured, fail safe strategies on which the student may rely when analyzing and organizing a writing assignment. This includes use of various types of "sequencing maps", "logic trees" and "persuasion maps". The process also incorporates reading and verbal analysis, which reinforces the task of learning to write, and is often fun. The tutoring methods address each stage of the writing process, from research and planning, to drafting, reviewing and editing.
