I've been teaching at the intermediate school level since 2006 mostly with 4th and 5th graders. This year I've been working in middle school as an ESL and special education reading and math support teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in US and African History from Earlham College and two master’s degrees-one from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in South Asian Studies and one in Bilingual Special Education from George Washington University.

I am a certified K-12 special education in the District of Columbia. My training was completed at the George Washington University with a master's in bilingual special education. As a classroom teacher, I have had extensive exposure to students with ADD/ADHD and helped them manage their academic success. One on one tutoring is an ideal opportunity for receptive students with ADD/ADHD to review concepts that may have missed while in class because of the nature of the condition.
I love tutoring elementary math. The best part is that math is so adaptable to fun activities. Whether you or your student are working with operations, geometry, graphing, algebra or measurement, there is a way to understand the concepts. Math is very personable at this level as well. If you or your student is frustrated with elementary math, I'm ready to help.
The importance of phonics is often overlooked. With more unique sounds in English than letters in the English alphabet, the spelling system has resorted to letter sound variations and letter combinations in the writing. If students miss this instruction, there is a good chance it will affect their fluency and comprehension. As a 4th grade teacher it was often my job to catch those students up in phonics who got through the 3rd grade without their full phonics inventory. As a result, I enjoy working with students as they learn how tricky and silly our spelling system can be.
Students with special needs require a broader inventory of strategies and methodologies to succeed academically. My training in Bilingual Special Education at the George Washington University not only provides me with those resources but additional pedagogical resources in second language learning. This becomes important when distinguishing between an English language learner and a student with developmental delays. I have worked with many students with SLD among others and have enjoyed seeing them all progress and succeed.
