Hi everyone! My name is Sam. I graduated with honors from Princeton University in 2012 with a degree in political science. My academic specialties include social sciences, history, and English. I'm also available to tutor high school level math (Algebra and Geometry) and Spanish. I have a strong standardized test record. I got a 2350 on the SAT I; scores of 800, 770, and 730 on the SAT II subject tests in U.S. history, English literature, and Spanish language, respectively; and 5's on each of the seven AP exams that I took (U.S. government & politics, comparative government & politics, English language, English literature, psychology, U.S. history, and European history).
My previous tutoring experience is with middle school students (grades 5-8). While students of different ages pose different challenges, I believe that tutoring middle schoolers has prepared me to tutor older students. The approach to tutoring that I've developed is a variation on the Socratic method. Instead of telling students the answer to a question, I try to get them to figure out for themselves how to solve the problem. I find that this method is effective because it allows students to participate actively in the learning process, instead of just passively listening to a lecture.
I think that two of the most important qualities for a tutor to possess are flexibility and patience. I realize that students learn in different ways and at their own paces. As a tutor, my job isn't to try to force them to do things my way, but, rather, to adjust my methods to accommodate their individual needs and preferences.
I'm excited to start working with you or your student! Drop me a line, and we can set something up. Additionally, if you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon,
Sam
