My 16 years of full-time English teaching experience at independent schools such as St. Anselm’s Abbey School have helped me prepare dozens of students for college. I’ve worked with Upward Bound students and in tutoring settings as well, and I’ve learned that the best method of helping a student is one which is custom-designed for that individual. I am an expert at helping students strengthen their weaknesses and enhance their strengths. Because working one-on-one has always been part of my teaching, I can figure out the best way to help each individual to grow as an effective reader and an efficient writer. Critical thinking skills and critical writing capabilities ought to be within reach of every student.
To tutoring, I also bring experience at helping students to prepare for tests such as the PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement. Additionally, I have worked with juniors and seniors on the process of writing college entrance essays that can help them stand out from the crowd of college applicants. When I taught part-time for three years at Montgomery College, Speech 101, an introductory oral communication course was an undergraduate requirement. The course included public speaking as well as group and interpersonal communication.
When a student works with me, she or he works hard. And when a student works with me, s/he’s got a teammate and fan as well as a pro coach.
Whether you are in high school or college, I can help you read and write more effectively. Taking AP English Composition? working on your research paper for junior social studies? struggling to figure out how to write an essay for a college to separate yourself from the crowd? We’ll work on your goal; and as a reader, I can help you feel the pulse of what you read and give you tips on how literature connects to everything. Which writers do you love, and which writers confuse you?
At Montgomery College in freshman composition, I worked with students who spoke Spanish and Farsi, and at The Beddow School, a Chinese junior joined my 11th grade English class. Je parle Francais un petit peu, so please let me help you strengthen your skills.
Grammar is all about bones or architecture. The English language has a great “build” and plenty of flexibility. But these facts can be tough to see. I can help you demystify the language so that you can write and think it with greater ease.
Whether you’re studying American Lit, English Lit, or literature without a prefix, I can help you with comprehension. Literature is the record of a culture; I can help you find the pulse of what you read and give you tips on how literature connects to everything. My favorite writers are St. Exupery (The Little Prince), Shakespeare (The Tempest, As You Like It), and Thornton Wilder (Our Town, The Bridge of San Luis Rey). Which writers do you love, and which writers confuse you?
It will be quite a long while before English teachers accept anything which looks like a text message, if you know what I’m talking about. The preceding 138 character sentence has no errors in it, but so often it can be hard to catch your own mistakes. Spellcheck helps, but no computer is as good as your own brain at the proofreading process. Let me help you learn to find and work those proofreading “muscles.”
I taught Speech 101 at Montgomery College for more than 3 years. MC was wise to make it a requirement for all students. My classes contained those who had just graduated from high school, those who had full-time jobs and wanted to increase their earning power, and those who had retired and wanted to pursue lifelong learning. My students practiced many different kinds of oral presentations: (the dreaded) informational speech; the persuasive speech; and the process speech (which is how I learned how to balance my checkbook). Group communications and informational interviews were also part of the course. Most importantly, everyone learned how to manage stagefright.
Figuring out SAT reading questions requires reading and thinking skills which differ from what you may be used to. For all of my 16 years of full time English teaching, I included practice units with my sophomores as they prepared to take the PSAT and with the juniors about to take the SAT. I can help you decode the questions on the reading section of the test; you’ll be more confident, and you’ll be a stronger reader.
Let me help you decode the test. I can coach you on how to spot the correct answers among the multiple choices; and we can figure out what writing skills of yours could do with some polishing. You already know how to succeed at timed writing: you have practiced every time you’ve answered an “essay question.” Timed writing for the SAT should be as much fun as anything else you enjoy.
The English language contains more words than any other language because it has borrowed so many words from so many other languages. I’ve got a number of useful ways to help you work on increasing the number of words in your vocabulary. This can help you be a stronger reader, writer, and test taker.
From pre-writing through your third revision, let me coach you through the stages of discovering your own writer’s voice. Taking AP English Composition? working on your research paper for junior social studies? struggling to figure out how to write an essay for a college to separate yourself from the crowd? I can help you become a detailed, effective writer, though afterwards, you may have trouble expressing yourself in 140 characters!
