I'm a 24-year-old Nigerian-American born in Baltimore, Maryland who graduated from Calvert Hall College High School as well as Princeton University. I'm in preparation to apply to pharmacy school, but I feel that tutoring and community outreach is a very important aspect of one's life and a duty to those with the drive to learn and succeed. I spent a lot of my college career doing various outreach programs and I would like to get back into it because changing the community can start from one student.
I ask a lot of questions, quiz students multiple times and break down difficult concepts into something basic. I will be a professional and even beyond my tutoring times, I could expand my hours to ensure that the student does well.
I can tutor almost every subject K-12 and some college courses but my specialties are the sciences and social studies. I have a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and I scored very well on the AP exams for Biology, Chemistry and US History. I also taught a class and prepared a curriculum for two and a half years so I know how to manage a classroom. When tutoring nursing students, I would speak the major topics off the top of my head because it would have been something I studied prior to the meeting. As I spoke, the student took notes off of my simplified explanation and asked questions about the topic. We would work hard for about thirty minutes to go through a chapter and then there would be fifteen minutes of questions and answers with explanations just to ensure that the material got through to them. I believe that memorizing key words as well as writing the words will lead to retention of the information through muscle memory and word association. I also quiz them about prior material during the next session because usually the material is connected.
The reason I would like to tutor is because I understand the difficulty that comes from learning. As a child I struggled to write my own name up until I was five years old and addition and subtraction seemed like calculus to me. It took a very determined group of people to turn me into a very literate and hardworking student and throughout the years, different teachers have stepped up and allowed me to achieve better by teaching me the joys of learning as well as the requirement of hard work. I wish to pass that on and hopeful help other people gain that love of knowledge.
I am very qualified to teach Algebra I.
I believe that I would be a good organic chemistry tutor because I have a solid understanding of the reactions and the mechanisms behind the reactions. I also understand that the main trouble with organic chemistry is that there are a lot of mechanisms to be reviewed before one takes a final. I got an A in organic chemistry I & II because I have a lot of notes that I found online and I was able to break down the large amount of information that is used into the basic parts I needed and I know I can do that with others.
