I am a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where I majored in Business Administration and Journalism. Studying Journalism greatly impacted me and enhanced my love for writing. As strange as it may sound, I love words and what you can do with them when writing. For me, writing is the most effective way to communicate. In my current job I write on a daily basis and also spend a lot of my free time editing school work for friends and family. Additionally, over the past two years I have served as a writing coach for an organization called Posse. In that role I worked with high school seniors to transform their writing ability from the high school to college level. When it comes to writing, I help people find and maintain their voice while working with them to make it stronger. Specifically, I allow the people I work with to put forth their ideas and really think deeply about what they want to convey to their audience. Once this is accomplished I help guide them toward the most effective ways of conveying the message through effective planning and organization of their ideas.
In regards to math....practice, practice, practice, and practice! Growing up, math was my favorite subject. I like facts and logic, and math is purely objective without room for ambiguity. Most recently I served as a math tutor for a young lady from DC who was taking Algebra in her freshman year of college. In this instance, I found it most effective to allow her to work out problems on her own so that I could identify where the problem was. As I worked with her, it was obvious she struggled with Algebra, but the real issue was her misunderstanding of negative numbers. Once that was discovered we were able to focus in on the real problem, which sturdied her foundation for future learning.
In general I have a deep desire to help students. Education has provided many great opportunities for me and I want to be sure that everyone has the same chances that I did.
