In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 40 years' experience in African Drumming. I have studied with Mor Thiam, Senegal, Babatunde Michael Olatunji, Nigeria, Chief Bey, U.S.A., Ibrahima Camara, Senegal, et al. My Mentor was Katherine Dunham, and I am the founder of an international drum and dance conference. I have danced and drummed with several African dance companies.
I have completed and passed Praxis I and II, as well as having 35 years in teaching experience K-12, and the university level. I have taught in the New Orleans, St. Louis, Richmond,Va., and Washington DC public school and charter school systems. I have University teaching experience at UCLA, Los Angeles, Washington University, St. Louis, St. Louis University Theatre Department, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis campuses.
I have a Bachelor's in Marketing from Xavier University with an emphasis on research and strategy. I also have worked with the Small Business Association specializing in start-up and Minority Business strategies.
I have experience in teaching including the Theatre Department at UCLA, Los Angeles, Washington, University, St. Louis, Mo., Xavier University of Louisiana, as well as St. Louis Black Repertory, Free Southern Theatre, New Orleans, Elegba Folkloric Society, Richmond to name just a few. I have performed in all genres and interned with Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. I have been mentored by Katherine Dunham, and performed with her company. I have written and co-produced three children plays, as well as performed.
