Hi! I love the subjects I teach, and I love helping my students master them.

I have a PhD in Biology from Johns Hopkins, and have done research in biochemistry and microbiology. While in graduate school, I taught undergraduates, and have tutored high school students, undergraduates, and professionals since then.

I think of learning as a journey. A teacher needs to know where the student is starting from and the best path to their destination. And ideally, the teacher knows some interesting sights along the way. With my knowledge of the territory and experience as a guide, I try to get the student to their goal as quickly and enjoyably as possible.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I received my PhD for work on protein chemistry, and have worked on forensic drug analysis.

Genetics

I have taught Mendelian and molecular genetics to undergraduates at Johns Hopkins and Montgomery College. I have also performed genetic manipulation and analysis in my own research work on bacteria and yeast.

I've had some students who were taking biochemistry in preparation for professional training. And if your goal is work in a clinical profession, much of the standard biochemistry curriculum will seem abstract and impractical. So I want to highlight a recent story in the Washington Post where a boy with a set of unusual symptoms was eventually diagnosed with a rare genetic disease in a pathway... read more
