Thanks for your interest in my services! I offer communication training and consulting for any venture, professional or personal, as well as introductory, intermediate, and professional levels of tutoring in several language areas. When you select me as your instructor or trainer, we will discuss your timeline, goals, and progress interests. Based on that discussion, I will develop a schedule and toolkit that could include everything from relevant frameworks for strategic evaluation of your project to in-session exercises or at-home practice or revision. These will vary depending on your skills and interests. I also offer group and multiple session rates if you are interested.

As a communication consultant, I have advised private businesses, public institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and political campaigns in producing clear, personalized messages and public personae. For a demonstration of my consulting, please contact me via WyzAnt. After a brief conversation, I generally offer sample editing and strategic evaluation to show how I would approach your project.

As a professional instructor, my teaching experience has centered around university classrooms and during university office hours. From 2007 to 2009, I taught Presentational Speaking at Syracuse University for two semesters and Public Advocacy for one semester. From 2009 to 2011, I taught introductory and upper division academic and professional writing at the University of Colorado Boulder. During my academic career I have twice been a member of teaching teams that taught introductory courses in Communication Theory. Standard practice for new teachers at both of these universities includes a full background check, which I passed consistently. I am happy to provide a curriculum vita or summary of my educational background if you are interested.

My goal as your instructor is to help you connect your strengths with your goals for message clarity, personality, style, tone, or overall improvement. For example, a life-long farmer might seek improvement in her or his public speaking proficiency for an upcoming community meeting. Experience working on and managing a farm would give that client unique experiences and valuable credibility and knowledge across speech situations. This is because the client knows things about her or his business, geography, community values, etc. that are well beyond objective expertise. To ignore these resources of skill and experience could all but alienate the client from the lesson; if, instead, we bring together the experiences and skills of the instructor and the client, both are likely to depart from a session rewarded for our efforts. This is my goal.

Thank you again for your interest as you look to hone your communication skills. Let me know how I can help!

Grammar

Grammar plays an important role in every writing or speaking session I teach. I offer lessons in parts of speech, sentence and paragraph construction, and higher-level instruction in syntax and audience.

I offer both single-session and extended curriculum services.

Proofreading

I offer introductory, intermediate, and mastery-level proofreading training. I offer three levels of emphasis:

1. The grammar and syntax of sentence construction and revision;
2. Paragraphs, their constituents, and their services; and
3. Proofreading the full draft

These levels of emphasis will be adapted to address your needs and goals for learning how to proofread. This includes proofreading your own work for different audiences, as well as proofreading the work of others.

I offer both single-session and extended curriculum services.

Public Speaking

Public speaking here includes training in several major speech genres: advocacy (arguing for or against), impromptu (unexpected awards, comments during meetings, speeches with little or no preparation time), and ceremonial (toasts, eulogies, weddings, speeches that mark an occasion).

I taught multiple sections of Presentational Speaking, a 300-level stand alone course at Syracuse University, for two semesters, while completing a master's degree in Communication & Rhetoric there. I also taught two recitation sections that included graded speeches for a course in Public Advocacy while at Syracuse University. Since moving to the University of Colorado Boulder, I have taught writing classes that successfully incorporated public speaking assignments into each course.

I offer both single-session and extended curriculum services.

Vocabulary

I offer vocabulary training for both standardized test preparation -- GRE/SAT/ACT -- and more generalized or specialized vocabulary training. Like learning a foreign language, the best tool for learning vocabulary is incorporating new words into our speech. Given this, a significant portion of your vocabulary training includes immersion in conversation that uses new vocabulary. This gives benefits to students by providing native context clues and providing far more nuance of meaning and basis for remembering new words.

I offer both single-session and extended curriculum services.

Writing

I offer tutoring and training in writing for any audience and at any skill level. You can see a sample of a few past exercises and assignments at wrtg.wordpress.com. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I offer both single-session and extended curriculum services.
