I have three years of experience as a teacher’s assistant in a DCPS kindergarten classroom and I have taught, tutored, and been involved with education in many ways for over ten years. Currently, I am seeking to transition into the education field full-time, and I am confident that I would be a strong fit as your child's tutor.
I am able to tutor in the following subjects: elementary reading, writing, and math; middle school reading and writing and pre-Algebra; high school reading and writing. I am currently working full-time but am hoping to alter my path so that I can tutor full-time or part-time during the day/early-evening.
My passion for social change and minimizing inequality has always kept me connected to teaching programs targeted at underprivileged communities. In 2007, I coordinated and taught a creative writing program for incarcerated males at Washtenaw County Jail. This project brought enormous challenges, but tremendous reward. The students responded extremely positively to the program and reported that they felt more in touch with themselves, their fellow inmates, and the outside world through their creative expression during the project.
While at the University of Michigan, an interest in early education and special-needs children brought me to a family with two young children with autism. I worked as a life-skills coach and academic tutor to both children (ages 2 and 4), and through patience, creativity, and a nurturing environment, both children made enormous progress verbally and cognitively. I learned a tremendous amount about special-needs students and was able cater instruction specifically to each child’s individual needs.
While living in Cape Town, South Africa, I managed a nonprofit working with recent high school graduates to enroll and stay in the formal school system. This required tailored mentorship, coaching, and much individual attention.
I love working with young people and I am confident in my abilities as an instructor. I know that my experience combined with my dedication, enthusiasm, compassion, patience, and firm belief that a great education is the right of all students will boost my success. I look forward to the opportunity to develop these skills and bring my unique outlook and love of learning and teaching to your child's education.
Thank you for your consideration.
