My name is Emily and I have been tutoring and helping students prepare for college applications for nine years. In addition to tutoring other students, I also home schooled my younger sister in AP US History (I'm an accredited teacher), AP US Government and Politics, and Senior Level English. While my strengths are in English and History, I am very competent in math and science and have tutored in them for years. I was exempt from taking the Praxis I exam for Elementary Education because my GRE scores were very good and I received national recognition for my Praxis II scores. While a majority of students I tutor are in elementary and middle school, I have a great deal of experience working with high school and college students as well.
I am also available for various test prep, study skills, and violin lessons -- I've been playing for over 15 years and have given lessons to multiple students.
I love teaching and tutoring and it's a great joy to me to be able to help students reach their full potential. I am currently a full time nanny and am willing to meet on evenings and weekends. I live in NE DC in a brand new building that has a business center; I can hold sessions there but am also willing to travel (a reasonable distance) to a library of your choice.

In addition to majoring in History in college (with a concentration in American History), I became an accredited AP US History teacher and developed and taught my own AP course to a home-schooled high school student; she took the AP exam and received a 5 (the highest score possible). In addition to the AP course, I have been tutoring high school and college students in History for the past six years.
In addition to going through the college admissions process myself, I was in charge of my younger (home-schooled) sister's application process, including SAT/ACT prep, finding colleges based on her financial and academic standing, applications, tours, and selecting one based on her acceptance offers. I have also met with 5 other students to counsel them through their college admissions process.
Many of the students I have worked with have been in the K-6 grade. My mother owns a home daycare, so in high school and college I worked with the school aged children with their homework and tutored them outside of the daycare when necessary. Although I am currently a nanny, it is my long term goal to become an elementary teacher.
I was exempted from taking the Praxis I as a result of my high GRE scores. I did take the Praxis II: Elementary Content Knowledge as well as Praxis II: PLT (K-6). I received national recognition for my PLT score (187) and did very well on the Content Knowledge as well (183). I'm confident in helping others reach passing scores.
A large part of studying successfully is first learning HOW to study. I have worked with students to teach them how to take notes, test taking strategies, manage their time, become more organized, and use their class materials to their fullest advantage. By learning these study skills and more, students are much more likely to achieve their goals.
Great on both method and encouragement — Emily met with our daughter about ten times and really helped her on a number of fronts. She was skillful at showing our daughter how to approach a question or a problem, whether verbal or in math. She helped her see that she could go back and forth between information in the question and options in the multiple choice. She taught how to use the options to help her understand what the question wan ...
