My name is Patrick. I am a graduate of Georgetown University where I earned my Bachelor's degree, as a Dean's List student, and double-majored in Government and Theater and Performance Studies. I actually first began tutoring ten years ago in high school at the request of my Spanish teacher who thought I would be good at helping my peers rise to their academic potential. It turns out that I was good at it, I enjoyed it immensely and I've been tutoring, coaching and mentoring off and on ever since in high schools, colleges and professional settings, as well as diverse low income neighborhoods in Middle and South America. I've also expanded and diversified my academic subject tutoring to include ESL/ESOL as well as life coaching in social skills and character development. I also specialize in teaching new technology to professionals.
I view the tutor/tutee relationship as a partnership based on mutual respect, honesty, trust and accountability. Results and exceptional achievement do not appear from thin air, but rather they are earned through practice, dedication, and a personal desire to do well. I understand that there are different styles of learning. Some students are visual, others are auditory, while still others are experiential. Some students have strong self-motivation, while others require significant support until their own achievements inspire them to strive even further.
Similarly, there are different styles of teaching. Primarily I believe in getting to know my pupils (and vice versa) in order to be able to craft interesting and worthwhile lesson plans that use method(s) of instruction that best match the learning style of each student. Assuming everything else is equal I believe in learning by doing through instruction, trial and error, and experiential understanding of not only that an answer is right or wrong, but more importantly why that is the case.

In my spare time, I volunteer as the Treasurer for Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A, a position I was privileged to be elected to in 2012. I also very much enjoy volunteering at the Washington Humane Society.
Macintosh was the first computer I ever used at age 6. I have been a life long Macintosh user ever since. I currently own and operate several Apple/Macintosh products including a MacBookPro (OSX 10.8.2), an iPhone 5 and an iPad with retina display. I have significant experience tutoring Macintosh for many of my "general computer" clients already and am completely versed in their use personally, professionally, and artistically.
Growing up both of my parents separately owned their own public relations and marketing firms. I worked at both full time during every summer from high school through college. I drafted press releases, executed diligent market research, conceived of creative and effective marketing plans, and helped clients put those plans into effect to the benefit of their businesses. Since graduating from college I've started three successful businesses of my own (one theater company, one real estate company, and one pet care company) and they were all successful because I marketed them to the appropriate target audience.
I've also marketed myself successfully enough to get myself elected to public office. My expertise is my experience. I can't help everyone market anything, but I am very good at creative out of the box thinking that can get you or your product noticed by the right people.
I am certified to tutor the use of Microsoft Windows by experience. I've had multiple general computing students of all ages and backgrounds, most of whom needed help understanding how to use the operating system.
I've grown up using, studying, and teaching Microsoft products, especially Windows. I started using Windows 3.1 a decade ago in 1992, graduated to Windows 95, and have mastered every Windows edition to date including XP (home and professional), Vista and Windows 7. I plan to upgrade to Windows 8 when it debuts.

I have set up numerous (25+) small (2 to 5 devices) and medium (5 to 15 devices) computer networks both as a volunteer and and as a professional in small office settings. I am proficient at networking computer to computer (including on the latest Mac and Windows operating systems) as well as networking/sharing periphery devices such as printers, modems, routers and scanners. I am familiar with cable, DSL, fiber optic, and mobile broadband/cellular internet connections (both wired and wireless) and I am well versed and experienced in manipulating TCP/IP. I am excellent at troubleshooting and I've never had a problem I couldn't fix when networking equipment in the past.
I've been writing and making speeches as well as coaching others to do the same for more many years. Beginning with acting for the stage more than ten years ago, I first experienced and trained in the art of performance in front of others. Since then, in addition to acting in plays, I have taken numerous public speaking classes at Georgetown University, taught high school acting and public speaking, given numerous speeches (as part of my classes, but also as a professional, politician, and motivational speaker). For two years I served as the book keeper at the Palm Beach Theater Guild, a Florida based non-profit that uses Quickbooks to process donations, issue payroll checks, and pay invoices for services received.

I believe that study skills are dependent on time management, prioritization, motivation, discipline and routine. No two people are exactly the same, but with these five pillars of study skills an appropriate and successful regimen can be achieved and applied by anyone.
As a tutor while I was in high school I helped my peers develop comprehensive plans to manage their time, get their work done, and still have time for fun and relaxation. Some of them needed flash cards, some of them needed to take notes about what they read in order to memorize it, some people needed to be asked questions and talk the material through in order to fully understand it.
In my case, for example, as an undergraduate at Georgetown, I spent my time in the theater on the stage and behind the scenes, volunteering as an EMT in the back of an ambulance, tutoring underprivileged students around the city, interning on Capitol Hill, working two part time jobs, AND maintaining Dean's List grades all the while. That last part was accomplished through the development and application of study skills. I did this by making sure I recorded my lectures and then I would listen to them again while I was at the gym to make sure I had retained the material.

I can help you outline your goals, I can teach you to prioritize and manage your time, I can help you find the tools and methods to help you study, and I can serve as your motivator until your results ignite your own motivation to achieve your goals on your own!
One of my majors at Georgetown University was Theater and Performance Studies. As an undergraduate I worked (in a title-page credit capacity) on 21 fully staged shows in three and a half years as a stage manager, designer, producer and actor, among other things. My work included significant contributions to world premieres, adaptation of literature for the stage, classic musicals, Shakespeare and more.
