Hello there! What does sociology mean to you? Many people confuse sociology with other sciences that have some similarities, like psychology. However, Sociology is quite different. Rather than asking why a person would commit a crime, become a successful entrepreneur, or homeless, as if it is related to something intrinsic within that person, or as a manifestation of their personality, Sociologists ask what is it about the structure of our society or our relationships that enable certain things to happen?

You may wonder just who is a sociologist? Do you remember that last time you heard someone describe themselves as such, that is outside of the academy? It is true that many people trained in the discipline tend not to identify themselves as such, especially if they work outside of the university. However, sociologists are all around us. They work in the government, for private corporations, and in non-profits. They help us to uncover the taken for granted nature of everyday life and expose power imbalances. Whether or not you agree with a sociologist's bent of a particular issue is not necessary, it is the journey you take to get there, by at least exploring the subject matter from a different angle. We use different theories to explain different social phenomena. It is helpful to think of theory as frames, or lenses with which you view the world. Won't you try on a few different pairs?

I have over two years' experience serving as a graduate teaching assistant where I helped lead discussions in class. I also met one-on-one with students to help them understand vital concepts and providing feedback on course projects as they were being crafted. Due to my experience grading writing assignments, I am a good judge of what it takes to make a paper stand out above the rest. Courses I have assisted include: Introduction to Sociology, Critical Social Theorists, American Society, Inequality, Race and Ethnicity, among a few others. I have spent an extensive amount of time studying gender inequality. I can also advise in introductory research methods and classical sociological theory.

As a tutor, I can provide quality, personalized instruction. Please let me know whether it is for a particular assignment, a test, or general comprehension. If you are looking for help in another topic area, please provide the name of the sociology course with which you need assistance, and I will let you know the extent of my experience and if I can help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In December 2010, I completed my M.A. in Sociology from American University, after finishing my master's thesis which focused on race, gender, class and sexuality, exploring the ways in which men understand their participation as consumers of female prostitution. I finished with a 3.95 GPA. I have been selected to present my paper at this year's annual ASA (American Sociological Association) conference.
