Microsoft Word

My experience with Word includes many different aspects from writing outlines and drafts through final manuscript preparation of my own work, and a substantial amount of editing of other people's manuscripts for publication. I have been using the program for about 16 years.

Reading

My experience teaching Reading spans all levels from elementary through adult. In particular, I am very experienced in tutoring Reading for the SAT -- I can help you conquer those long passages! I am also experienced in helping students prepare for ACT, AP Literature, ESOL, and ASVAB.

Spanish

My tutoring experience includes Spanish at all levels, including SAT II Spanish. In Spring 2012 I tutored Spanish with a small group through WyzAnt.

My level in Spanish is fluent - bilingual. In addition to 8 years of formal study, from middle school through university, I lived for several years in Peru and have traveled extensively in Latin America and Spain. I have also done Spanish-English translation for academic publication.

Writing

My experience includes tutoring at all levels from elementary through high school, as well as college teaching in writing-intensive courses.

I especially enjoy working with high school students on research papers, SAT essays, and college application essays. I can help your student with all aspects of writing, from initial brainstorming through the final proofreading and polish.

I am a published author and have professional editing experience as well.

English

Very experienced with English instruction, especially high school. My tutoring includes the verbal sections of PSAT, SAT, ACT, and similar admissions-related tests, as well as AP language and literature curriculum and IB. I also can help with ESL/ESOL.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience as a professional editor and proofreader, especially of academic manuscripts. My experience includes editing texts written in English by writers for whom English is a second language.

SAT Reading

I have almost four years experience tutoring SAT Reading. I have almost 4 years of experience tutoring SAT, specializing in the verbal sections. For the Writing, in the objective sections, I work generally on helping the student understand grammar, syntax and usage overall, and focus on identifying the specific point that is raised in each individual question.

Phonics

I have worked with more than 20 students on phonics, from pre-K through second grade. Learning sessions include all aspects from letter recognition, sound and image association, speech practice, and phrase and sentence building. Special emphasis on helping young students identify sounds and letters in everyday words and activities.

Study Skills

In three years of tutoring, I worked with about 15 elementary students in several areas of improving study skills. These include overall time management, organization of materials, vocabulary review including flashcards, planning and implementing large projects by dividing into smaller components, and how to create a distraction-free work area. Religion

I have taught Religion and Culture course at the college level. Studied Latin American religious history at graduate level. Worked with students on religion-related content (class essays, DBQs for exams) in AP World History.

ESL/ESOL

English is my first language, and I am bilingual in Spanish. I have worked with speakers of many different languages at levels from K - adult out of school, helping them with oral comprehension, speech, reading, and writing. I can help you with general usage and with preparing for standardized tests.

ASVAB

I tutored for the ASVAB in 2009-10, concentrating on the English language portions. ASVAB is heavy on vocabulary, so I focus on vocabulary building and learning how to use words in context. For the reading portions, we review methods to improve both accuracy and speed.

Public Speaking

I am experienced in helping students prepare for college admissions interviews, job interviews, presentations of academic papers, and oral interpretation of literature. For my undergraduate degree in theater, I studied speech and diction, as well as acting, and gained experience helping fellow actors prepare scenes and memorize lines.

Career Development

My experience with high school and college students include substantial advising. Subjects that we cover include how to select a college and a major, how and when to apply, and how to identify sources of aid for particular majors. Special attention to minority students, especially Hispanic/Latino.

College Counseling

In recent years, in 3 years of tutoring, I have worked with several dozen students on the application process.
