I tutored for the ASVAB in 2009-10, concentrating on the English language portions. ASVAB is heavy on vocabulary, so I focus on vocabulary building and learning how to use words in context. For the reading portions, we review methods to improve both accuracy and speed.
My experience with high school and college students include substantial advising. Subjects that we cover include how to select a college and a major, how and when to apply, and how to identify sources of aid for particular majors. Special attention to minority students, especially Hispanic/Latino.
In my most recent six years of tutoring, I have worked with several dozen students on the college application process. This encompasses helping them prepare applications, including short answer questions, sometimes as many as ten applications per student. In particular, I specialize in application essay writing. I also have helped students prepare successful scholarship applications. I have seven years' experience tutoring SAT Reading. I have developed proven methods to help you expand your vocabulary, and retain your understanding of the words you have learned, for the Sentence Completion Sections. I also concentrate on helping students thoroughly understand the structure of the test so that they can work efficiently.
My specialty, however, is the long passages. I will help you understand exactly what is being asked of you, how to decipher the complicated questions, and how not to get lost in the dense wording of the passages. Learning to concentrate on the most important aspects, and developing techniques for staying focused on those key elements are two of the things I help students master.
I have seven years of experience tutoring SAT, specializing in the verbal sections. For the Writing, in the objective sections, I work generally on helping the student understand grammar, syntax and usage overall, and focus on identifying the specific point that is raised in each individual question.

My tutoring experience includes Spanish at all levels, including SAT II Spanish. In Spring 2012 I tutored Spanish with a small group through WyzAnt.
My level in Spanish is fluent - bilingual. In addition to 8 years of formal study, from middle school through university, I lived for several years in Peru and have traveled extensively in Latin America and Spain. I have also done Spanish-English translation for academic publication.
In three years of tutoring, I worked with about 15 elementary students in several areas of improving study skills. These include overall time management, organization of materials, vocabulary review including flashcards, planning and implementing large projects by dividing into smaller components, and how to create a distraction-free work area. For students with attention deficit issues, I also worked on methods for improving concentration and scheduling of work into manageable periods of time.
