ESL/ESOL

English as a Second Language is taught as a special English subject - the goal is to get students to express themselves in a language (English) other than their own, using reading, speaking and listening techniques for non-native speakers. Initially relying on pictures and short conversation, students graduate to studying by using "realia" of the language -- signs, brochures, real written material. Ultimately, students will learn through listening to long radio programs or tv shows, reading news articles and stories, and participating in conversations and repetitive spoken exercises. I have taught ESL/ESOL for more than 15 years in Washington, DC; I also had a 5-week assignment teaching in Tbilisi, Georgia. I have relied on and reference Longman, Pearson, and Azar grammar books, among many others. I engage students in conversation as soon as possible to encourage direct student-centered learning. I play English tapes for them to repeat and engage in actual situations to encourage dialogue.

Proofreading

I have been a professional in the publications field for more than 20 years, working as an editor and writer for non-profit associations and organizations, including the American Association of University Women. In my capacity as managing editor, I have been responsible for editing and proofreading hundreds of publications annually. I freelance as an editor and writer and often find myself unconsciously proofreading randomly presented information, including elevator signs and menus, but I can't help it.

TOEFL

I have taught TOEFL prep for more than 15 years, seven of which were at KAPLAN, the leading test-prep center in the country. I started teaching TOEFL test prep with paper-based tests, then computer-based, and now internet-based tests. I have had great success with my students, who have advanced their TOEFL test scores with minimal tutoring. I use a variety of test prep materials, including ETS, Barron's, Princeton Review, and Longman.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
