I am a dynamic tutor with ten years experience tutoring in history and related social sciences (geography, political science, basic social studies). I have additional experience tutoring Microsoft Office and introductory Arabic (MSA).

My clients come from all economic and demographic backgrounds, at both college and high school levels (students below age 14 not accepted), and I will go beyond my stated distance limit of 20 miles for the right student. I seek to treat each student respectfully, as an individual, and look to address the specific areas where the most help is needed.

My primary experience with high school students was in the 5 boroughs of New York City, where I helped to improve my client's scores on the NY State Regents exam in Global History and Geography. I have also tutored for the Regents exam in US History, for AP courses and exams in US, European and Global History, and for the SAT II History subject examination.

The high rating I have received from my clients is proof enough of the success I have had in helping students succeed, and I will add that many of my past students came to me having failed more than once in the subjects and exams that they sought my assistance with, and that the majority of them improved immensely after receiving my assistance.

Without any prior training, I have successfully tutored both "high needs" and "at-risk" youth, and I have additional experience as a multi-subject volunteer tutor at the Shaw campus of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, DC.

A significant part of my time is spent working with students on their essay writing skills- providing a stronger focus on structure and timing, and developing approach strategies for exams. I can also provide homework assistance and additional practice testing for students who require it.

My base-rate of $40/hour is adjustable on a "need-based" basis- I will assess your situation after our first meeting, and prior to billing.

For undergraduate college students, my primary experience has been to assist in study and preparation for mid-term and final exams in Western Civilization and US History survey courses. I have also provided assistance on research papers, with essay writing and in preparation for classroom tests.

As a graduate student, I was employed as a tutor by the athletic department of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. My position at GMU was to tutor student athletes in their required History survey courses- Introduction to Western Civilization and Introduction to US History- and I also obtained my first experience tutoring in Introductory Arabic at this time. I worked with athletes playing men's and women's basketball, tennis, lacrosse and on the track and field team.

I began my tutoring career as a peer tutor through the Student Activities department at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Virginia in 2003, where I assisted my fellow students in US History and Western Civ courses.

Note to all students: I will NOT write your papers for you, so don't even ask. I will assist you in your writing, only in permissible and ethical ways. Thanks.

AA in Liberal Arts- Northern VA Community College (2003)
BA in History- George Mason University (2005)
BA in Religious Studies (Islamic Studies minor)- GMU (2005)
MA in History- George Mason University (2008)
Certificate in Arabic Language and Culture- Hedayet Institute for Arabic Studies (2011)

My graduate concentration was in Comparative World History, with a geographic focus on the Middle East, a thematic focus on global Islamic history, and with a temporal concentration on the Medieval and Early Modern eras.

My primary research has been on the Fatimid Caliphate and broader Isma'ili history, Islamic legal debates on dissent, the Middle East as a crossroads of global trade and cultural exchange, the development of shrine visitation throughout the Muslim world, and on the history of Islam in the Americas.

I have successfully completed graduate-level coursework in Middle Eastern, Central Asian, European, Caribbean, North American (including Native American) and Indian Ocean world history. These courses covered from ancient to modern times.

My travel and cross-cultural experience is extensive: over 2 dozen countries in the Americas, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, North Africa and South Asia- including study-tours of Egypt and Tunisia- and I have resided in Cairo, Egypt for intensive study of the Arabic language and Egyptian culture.

In addition to Arabic (FusHa wa Al-Amiyya Masry), I have native fluency in American English, am conversational in German, and have basic proficiency in French and Spanish. I am also familiar with key words and phrases in Farsi, Hindi/Urdu and Gujarati.

American History

I have completed US History coursework in college and in grad school, with a focus on Native American History and immigration studies. I have also lectured publicly on Labor History, immigration and US Politics, and have tutored for the NY State Regents Exam in US History.

I studied Arabic over 2 years, and I am capable of teaching the alphabet, word structure, and key words and phrases.

European History

I have completed coursework in European History (Western Civilization) in College and in Grad School. My interests included European political history, religion and warfare, Islam in Europe, and the legacy of Alexander the Great in non-Western contexts. I have tutored undergraduate college students for exams, research papers and finals.

I have successfully tutored students for Regents exams in US History and Global History and Culture. I have a BA in History, and an MA in History, with a concentration in World History. The majority of my students for the Regents had failed the exams multiple times, and with my help they improved immensely- earning a grade of B or higher. In the past, I have primarily relied upon the Barron's guidebook when assisting students, but am also quite familiar with other guides, and I have a wide variety of teaching aids to assist with my tutoring for the Regents (historical atlases, practice questions, etc).

Religion has always been an interest of mine. Raised Christian, as an adult I branched out to study a variety of faiths. One of my undergraduate majors was in Religion, with a minor in Islamic Studies, and I have read and written most extensively on Islam. My greatest areas of expertise are Ismaili Shiism, Sufism, Islamic Law, and Modern Political Islam. While working on my Master's in World History I was fortunate to be able to focus on the history of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the histories of Muslim communities in South and East Asia and North America. I have also taken classes on various aspects of Hinduism, Christianity and ancient Near Eastern/ Mediterranean religions, and am well-read on a variety of other beliefs as well.

I have acted professionally for stage and film, and I am employed part-time as an Over-hire Stage Hand by the Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington, DC. In high school, Theater Education was a major part of my curriculum and extra-curricular activities. I studied fencing for 2 years, and once earned a commendation from the fight master of the Folger Shakespeare Library for my fight choreography. I have also participated in professional theater-related workshops on topics as varied as improvisation, accents and dialects, and swing dancing.

World History

My concentration in grad school was World/Global History, and I have completed coursework and research at both the college and graduate levels. My primary focus is the global history of Islam, and my coursework and research has included the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, South Asia and East Africa.

I take particular interest in Middle Eastern and South Asian history, and in the continuity of cultural, intellectual and linguistic exchange among trading communities within the Indian Ocean, from the Medieval period to the Early Modern. I have also lectured on Labor Politics in early 20th Century Argentina.

I have tutored most extensively for the NY State Regents Exam in Global History and Geography.
