Bible Studies

I was so very blessed to have grown up going to church, and then getting to start teaching Sunday School when I was a teenager. I completed a 2-year Bible School course before transferring to college. And I have, since then, also continued teaching Sunday School in various churches I've gone to. The Bible is definitely my favorite book!!

Cooking

Are you interested in learning to prepare healthy AND tasty foods the "unbake way"? My health has improved tremendously through going onto a "raw vegan" diet, and I would love to pass these wonderful benefits on to you, as well!

I have been eating a "raw vegan" diet for more than 6 years now, and have never enjoyed food more. The recipes and ingredient combinations are unlimited, and are so guilt-free! Do yourself a big favor, and give it a try!

Dutch

I learned Dutch as a teenager in order to attend the Dutch public school for middle school and high school. This was on the island of Bonaire, in the Netherlands Antilles, where the national language is Dutch. I lived and went to school there for five years, and continued visiting Bonaire for many years even after that, as that was our family home for 26 1/2 years!

Elementary (K-6th)

My experience with elementary level subjects started out with tutoring children in ESL, including K-6th graders. Since then I also have tutored K-6th graders in reading, language arts, and math. My experience and on-the-job training as an ESL and reading/language arts tutor for 3 years in the public school equipped me very well for working with K-6th grade children.

English

I have been a Language Arts tutor in English and reading in the past in an official capacity at Sage Park Middle School in Windsor, CT, for 3 years, and have done tutoring in the same on my own, as well, since 2005. Since I have been teaching and tutoring ESL/ESOL since 1989, besides, this also has contributed to my experience in dealing with teaching/tutoring English.

ESL/ESOL

My experience with teaching ESL/ESOL began back in 1989, when I taught at the ABC Adult School in Cerritos, CA, for 7 years. I taught at the beginning and intermediate levels, and did substitute teaching at all levels. I also did private tutoring of ESL/ESOL for children and adults at all levels. More recently, I tutored ESL/ESOL students from grades 6 - 8 at Sage Park Middle School in Windsor, CT. I have special interest in, and experience in teaching American English Pronunciation. I enjoyed teaching a course in that to business employees of Electronic Data Systems in Cypress, CA, in the past. And I have worked with individual students since then, as well, to help them improve their pronunciation of English. I love helping students learn to "hear" English in a new way, and therefore be equipped to speak it even better! My credentials include two at the adult education level. In 1994 I received the "Clear Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential: Full-Time" from the state of CA for teaching ESL/ESOL. And in 2004 I received the "Initial Educator" credential for teaching "English to Non-English Speaking Adults" from the state of CT. In August of 2008, I also temporarily obtained an "Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit" from the state of CA, for working with children, as well. Having lived and worked overseas myself, I have a lot of cross-cultural experience, also. As a teenager on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean, I got to go to high school in the Dutch language, which I loved getting to do. Then later as a young adult, I lived in the country of Indonesia, doing language, linguistic, and Bible translation work for 4 years. I was not able to continue that work due to health matters at that time. But instead, now I really enjoy getting to work with ESL/ESOL students wherever I am!!

Indonesian

I worked 4 years as a linguist and Bible translator in Indonesia, in what is now called Papua. I really enjoyed learning, and conversing in Indonesian. Indonesians said my pronunciation was very good - it had obviously really helped to have had linguistic and phonetics training prior to learning this great language!

Phonics

My experience with phonics is with ESL/ESOL students, just learning to speak and read English. I have used the "Explode the Code" books, which worked very well for that.

I also have an M.A. in linguistics, which included thorough phonetics training. I especially enjoyed that part of linguistics, and taught it (phonetics) to small groups of university students one summer at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK.

Reading

I have been a private reading tutor here and there since I was in high school, and have been a language arts tutor for 3 years in the middle school. This equipped me in various ways to work even more effectively with students having challenges with reading!

Writing

I was a language arts tutor for 3 years at Sage Park Middle School, which included writing, as well as reading. I enjoyed helping students in the classroom, as well as one-on-one, to improve their writing skills. I know writing is such an important tool for everyone, and it is so helpful to give students some structure with and from which to work!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
