I have taught mathematics from middle school through community college, and have been an educator in math and philosophy for 10 years. I see my previous students from time to time, and they are always eager to tell me how much they appreciated my teaching.

I am very patient, and able to diagnose quickly the difficulties students have with math. We will work together very diligently to improve your understanding and skills, so that you will achieve mastery in your subject. I am a fully (BEST) certified professional math teacher in Connecticut. I have taught middle and high school mathematics for four years in Fairfield and Waterbury. I have also privately tutored high school geometry and algebra, as well as dozens of 6th, 7th and 8th graders in small groups at Roger Ludlowe Middle School in Fairfield, CT.

My kids at RLMS significantly improved in their problem areas of the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT), and my efforts were recognized and appreciated by the school principal.

I was the Math Team advisor at Tomlinson Middle School in Fairfield. My kids practiced diligently during our after school sessions, placed second at the local math competition and advanced to the state competition in 2008.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 at Wilby High School in the Waterbury Public Schools. In my lessons, I utilized TI-84 graphing calculators in a local area network. My students were able to interact with the lesson content using their calculators, which motivated them to focus on the material being taught.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 at Wilby High School in the Waterbury Public Schools.

Microsoft Excel

I use Microsoft Excel daily in my full time career as a structural engineer in the aerospace industry.

General Computer

I have been using computers, programming on them, internet surfing, shopping, banking, etc. since having my very first Apple IIe personal computer.

I am fully capable of explaining the basics of general computer use to any new user who wishes to use the computer to increase his/her own productivity or pursue interests, such as writing, reading, or gaming.

Geometry

I have taught geometry at both the middle school and high school levels, including honors geometry at Fairfield Warde High School. Geometry is a wonderful subject for designing unique and motivating lessons using the computer. For example, in many of my lessons, I utilized Microsoft PowerPoint animation very effectively to visually demonstrate properties of geometric figures and geometric relationships.

Microsoft Word

I use Microsoft Word in my full time career and privately. I am familiar with the use of styles, as well as creating table of contents, list of figures, and index entries. I also know how to create tables in Word, as well as import Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel objects.

Microsoft PowerPoint

When I was a mathematics teacher in the public schools, I relied heavily on PowerPoint presentations to offer students good visuals in learning math. I have used movie clips, animation and transitions to maximum effect in PowerPoint.

Prealgebra

I have taught 7th grade pre-algebra at Tomlinson Middle School in Fairfield, CT.

Precalculus

I taught one semester of precalculus during my student teaching at Fairfield Warde High School.

Trigonometry

I taught trigonometry as part of my student teaching in precalculus at Fairfield Warde High School.

GRE

I have taken the GRE Computer Adaptive test as well as a Kaplan class in studying for my own GRE exams. I was also recruited by Kaplan to become a GRE test prep instructor due to my high GRE scores. I have gone through the test prep training with Kaplan and have learned the basic skills and tips needed to master the test.

Philosophy

I hold a Masters degree in philosophy from Fordham University. My concentration as a graduate student was in ethics. I am able to tutor the ethical systems of Plato, Aristotle, Kant and modern virtue ethics.

I also have a strong background in the history of philosophy, especially ancient Greek and early modern periods.

Elementary Math

I am fully (BEST) certified to teach mathematics in Connecticut, and have 4 years of experience teaching at the middle school and high school level. Fortran

I majored in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. As part of my core coursework, I took a semester class called Engineering Computation, which used FORTRAN 77 to program numerical solutions to physical problems. I began programming in BASIC when I was a kid, with my first Apple IIe computer, and have a strong ability in developing code to execute numerical computations and text-based tasks on the computer.

Logic

I hold a Master of Arts in the field of philosophy, which requires a very strong ability in logical thinking and the analysis of arguments. As part of my graduate training, I have successfully completed coursework on symbolic logic. I have also taught a class on informal logic at SUNY Purchase.

Praxis

In preparing to become a certified math teacher in Connecticut, I studied for and took the Praxis Secondary Math exam. The key to performing well on the exam was to spend a few weeks prior to the exam, taking practice tests and learning the types of questions and basic test structure. I passed this exam the first time with a very good score. Most math teachers I have met had to take it more than once before they passed.

Mechanical Engineering

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1991. I focused in the area of structural mechanics, but also took classes in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and aerodynamics.

Presently, I am a full time aerospace engineer performing structural analysis on gas turbine engine components for a major aircraft engine company in Connecticut.
