I have successfully tutored high school students struggling with various aspects of French, from getting that accent down, to speaking rhythms, and increased mastery of vocabulary, reading, and grammar. I work on improving study habits, test taking, and enjoying the learning process. While teaching French grammar and literature at SUNY-Binghamton, I earned top student teaching evaluations. I am easy going but know how to motivate and set challenging goals.
In high school I struggled with French and sought out a tutor myself. The experience turned around my uninspiring performance and ignited a passion for French. I know what a good tutor can do for a struggling or ambitious student. I went on to major in French at college and then later to earn my doctorate in French.
Apart from my own learning experiences and academic training, I have also twice lived in France, giving me a direct feel for the people and culture. While studying at the Alliance Française in Paris, I lived in a classic tiny attic apartment overlooking the beautiful Jardin de Luxembourg. Later I lived in Maisons-Alfort, just outside of Paris, and commuted by métro into downtown Paris to study at the Bibliothèque Nationale. I've also lived in Clermond-Ferrand and Pont-de-l'Arc, the latter while directing the SUNY system-wide study abroad program in Aix-en-Provence.
I am also certified to teach English (as a second language) and Vocabulary.
I enjoy helping students improving their skills and finding their direction as learners.
