Approved subjects are in bold.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach Music by the State of Massachusetts and have done so for over 25 years. My compositions have been performed at public events and festivals and I have taught and tutored Music Composition to students who have gone on to succeed in colleges and universities throughout the country. One of my students works in Los Angeles, CA writing music for the film industry. Music composition combines theory with artistic flare and creative energy which results in unique and original music. One must not only learn the rules of the game, so to speak, but also be able to bring their own style to their compositions.
I am a 35 year veteran teacher k-12. I taught in the Massachusetts public schools and have retired to Connecticut. I have tutored students of all ages in English, Writing, Reading, History, Music and Theater. My expertise includes motivational development and positive self imaging for students. Learning is, and should be fun. My approach is to meet each student where they are and help them grow to grade level and beyond.
I am a professional guitarist as well as a 25 year veteran High School Music Teacher. I have taught private and group lessons. My focus is on teaching students the basics and bringing them to the point where they can move to whatever style or genre they choose. From rock to classical, the guitar, like the piano, does it all. It is a truly versatile and brilliantly designed instrument.
As a 25 year veteran High School Music Teacher and church organist/pianist I have a great deal of experience playing the piano. Traditional piano teaching approaches the student as if he/she were going to become a concert, classical pianist. I teach my students how music works, and then how to apply it to the piano. Fingering, chord structure, reading and the basic elements of music (rhythm, melody & harmony) are, of course, common to all piano music, however endless scales and exercises I have found to be counterproductive to most student's learning process. I teach my students how to make the music they like on the piano using that music as their vehicle to mastering the instrument.
I am certified by the State of Massachusetts to teach Drama and Speech and did so in High School for over 30 years. The art of Public Speaking also often includes the art of Speech Writing as well. I did my graduate work at the A.R.P at Harvard University, with a concentration in Speech and Drama. I teach both formal and informal elocution, with an emphasis on enunciation, style, dynamics and rhetoric.
I am a veteran teacher and tutor who has always concentrated on study skills as a prerequisite to the study of any and all subject areas. Listening, understanding, note taking, organizational skills, critical thinking and reading skills should be taught with the subject area as the vehicle to teach them. To paraphrase the old adage, "I don't give my students fish, I teach them how to fish!" I try to promote a lifelong love of learning in my students, which can only be accomplished if they are successful.
