My work ethic is to help students learn by being flexible, differentiating instruction and maintaining a positive attitude that provides a caring learning environment that directly benefits students. Teaching is a collaborative effort where teachers, administration, parents and the community work together as a team to help students to prosper and grow academically and emotionally.
It is important for a teacher to understand a student’s learning style, cultural background and social/emotional needs. Extensive lesson planning is required to address a student’s individual needs. Differentiating and modifying helps individual students to complete the same assignment the entire class is doing.
For example, in writing assignments I modify the number of paragraphs and sentences that need to be written. I give some students a graphic organizer along with concrete examples or a model of the assignment. Editing can be done individually, with a partner, or one on one with me. For reading assignments I give some students a different leveled book on the same topic.
In Math, some students use manipulatives and graphic organizers. Other students are able to complete assignments independently. I put students who need additional help into a small group for more guided practice and scaffolding.
As shown in the above examples, the skills that make me an outstanding teacher is the ability to understand and address individual learning styles and abilities.
