Hello! My name is Melissa, and I am currently a grad student in the Boston area studying Human Anatomy. I majored in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Hartford where I also received a minor in math, and during my sophomore, junior and senior years, I tutored other undergraduate students in math (algebra, trig, calc, etc) and physics courses. I wanted the students I worked with to get the most out of their time with me. Some students would send me the topics they wanted to go over or some examples of what was troubling them before our meetings so that I had a chance to prepare my response/assistance.
I am also very competent with basic middle school and high school classes. I did well on the 5 AP exams that I took (AP Literature, Language and Composition, U.S. History, U.S. Government, and Psychology). I also did well on the reading and math portions of the SATs (2040 overall) and the GREs.
When I was in high school I was diagnosed with ADD and have since learned a variety of compensatory skills which I can pass on to children or young adults learning to cope with difficulty focusing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I spent 3 years working at the Math and Physics Tutor Lab at the University of Hartford where I did my best to help students (both high school and college) in all different levels of math including Algebra 1. I am very comfortable helping students to understand the topics taught in Algebra 1. I know it is a subject that requires a thorough understanding of the method/process used to solve problems, as it forms the basis for all higher level math learned afterwards.

Algebra 2

I spent 3 years tutoring all different levels of math including Algebra 2. I minored in math in college. My strong fundamental knowledge of the basic math principles taught in Algebra 2 allowed me to succeed in higher level math classes.

American History

I passed both A.P. U.S. History and A.P. U.S. Government. I think that my experience would enable me to assist middle or high school students taking U.S. History, A.P., Honors, or regular level.

Anatomy

I have taken Anatomy classes as both an undergraduate and graduate student. I learned some very helpful strategies for passing them.

Biostatistics

I took Biostatistics at the BU School of Public Health as a graduate student. I received an A- in the course. Beyond that, I have a strong background in math (which I have a minor in).

Calculus

I spent 3 years working at the Math and Physics Tutor Lab at the University of Hartford where I did my best to help students (both high school and college) in all different levels of math including Calculus I and II. I minored in math as well.

Literature

I completed A.P. Lit in high school (and passed the exam). I have a passion for literature and would be able to assist students struggling with this class. I am a quick reader, so if I haven't already read the book in question, I can do that on my own time. I can help students by discussing the novel with them to further their own analysis, and I can help with essay-writing/editing.

Physics

I spent 3 years working at the Math and Physics Tutor Lab at the University of Hartford where I did my best to help students (both high school and college) in all different levels of math and Physics, both Calculus- and Algebra-based Physics I and II. Beyond that, many of my engineering courses required the use of physics principles.

Physiology

I have taken Physiology classes as both an undergraduate and graduate student. I learned some very helpful strategies for learning the massive amount of material these classes contain. I also have a few different resources such as worksheets and diagrams that can be used to supplement receives from his or her own class.

SAT Math

SAT Math requires an understanding of the fundamentals of high school math. I have demonstrated repeatedly my competence in different areas of mathematics, and I have the experience and patience to explain them to any student.

SAT Reading

I am very comfortable with the content on the Reading portion of the SATs. I personally did well on this section (700), and I have experience explaining my thought process and reasoning to students preparing for the exam.

Vocabulary

I have always been a voracious reader which began expanding my vocabulary when I was quite young. In high school I took 3 years of Latin which improved my ability to determine the meaning of a word I did not know.
