How does one teach a person to be creative, to be an artist? I think some of the best ways are by example, knowledge of past and present practice in the field, and by group discussions which include some fundamental questions, for example: what determines a work of art? What are the responsibilities of the artist in society? How does one use visual imagery and verbal expression to communicate?

I believe that teaching my students the necessary technical skills and knowledge of materials will unfold a full range of possibilities to better achieve their aesthetic goals. Aesthetic systems of analysis help teach students to judge their work in visual terms, for instance: the analysis of visual components; the analysis of composition; the analysis of color theory; the elements and principles of design.

My students can learn to apply this analysis to their future work, to think carefully about all decisions they make with regard to materials and technique and to relate these decisions to a historical and theoretical context. Most importantly their work will be judged according to these goals that they have set for themselves.

I received my Masters of Fine arts in Painting from Western Connecticut State University, and have college level teaching experience as well students ranging in age from 5-12.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
