I have 20+ years of teaching experience. I have spent most of my teaching years with students aged eleven to nineteen. I have had a focus on history, geography, and religious studies, all subjects which are part of the Social Studies curriculum.
I think my experience and dedication to teaching make me a strong candidate for to tutor your child. Being a teacher is something that I am very passionate about, and I always prepare lessons thoroughly so that all students have access to the learning experience. I consider myself to be a firm, but fair teacher, and have also been told this by both former students and colleagues.
I am also in the process of attaining my Advanced Certificate in Social Studies so that I can continue to improve my teaching skills, and obtain my New York State certification. I shall then be following this with a unit on Special Needs within Social Studies to improve the skills that I already have with working with students with special educational needs. Whilst doing this I have taught and tutored High School Regents: Global History, U.S. History, and Middle School History, Geography, Religious Studies, ELA. I also taught Social Studies to ELL students (Levels 1-4)
I enjoy being able to create lessons that fit into the curriculum, while peaking students’ curiosity, encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning, and helping them to develop inquiring minds. I am a team player, and like to work with teachers to create the best learning experiences for students. This in turn helps them to succeed with the standardized testing required by New York.
I was asked to come into my last school in England to help pull it out of failing, and potentially closing, status. The government body known as OfSted was considering recommending closure for the school. My team not only managed to prevent closure but elevated it’s rating to "Good" in its last inspection. This is the second highest possible rating that can be achieved by a public school in England.
I relocated from England 6 years ago and love working with students.
In addition, I have a great deal of experience of working with at-risk students in the inner-city setting, and in rural settings too, and would appreciate the opportunity to contribute to any student's continued success.; I can promise that meeting with me will not be a waste of your time.

I also took several classes at Lehman College with regards to American History - Civil Rights Movement, Government, The History of American Foreign Relations, and US History 1945-Present.

I have tutored students to prepare them for their Regents exams, and also to aid them if they have been having trouble within the subject area (Yonkers Schools).
I am Montessori trained and am therefore certified to teach phonics to students aged 2 1/2 to 7 years old. I have also used phonics when working with both mainstream and students with special educational needs in subject specific classes as they have needed to be able to grasp the spellings of vocabulary.
I use phonics when working with EAL students (English as an Additional Language).
By breaking words down phonetically I have often been able to help hearing impaired students access the curriculum too.
I have taught for over 20 years, and most of my class sizes have been 30+ students. I've had to hold the attention of all students, maintain control, and get them to be in a position to be able to participate. This I have done by varying my volume, vocabulary, and vernacular.
I have had to hold assemblies in front of 2,000 students plus school staff. I have also had to hold encourage debating within lesson time; often by modeling what had to be done first. I've given presentations in front of the parents and carers of students.
Finally, the most challenging has been to teach a lesson to an unknown class, on a topic of the interviewing school's choice, in front of governors, department heads, and principal, in an interview for a position as a classroom teacher!

I have tutored students in Yonkers Schools District during Summer School so that they can retake their Regents.
I have been a teacher for 20+ years and have prepared students for national exams in many subject areas.
I studied many religions when I was completing my BA at college. We looked at contemporary moral issues, key texts and beliefs, and rites of passage.
I then went on to teach religious studies to students aged 11-19 in the English school system, and have also used that experience to teach students Grade 6-Grade 12, with a focus on helping those prepare for Regents exams.
