I am a school librarian with more than 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience! I have taught all ages, pre-school through college, in Math, Music, English, History, and Foreign Languages (French, Spanish, Italian and German). I have experience in both public and private schools, and in a variety of curricula: Everyday and Singapore Math, Reading and Writing Workshop among others. I love helping with test prep; SAT, ISEE, SSAT. My students have increased confidence and scores, and have gained admission to top independent schools and colleges after our time spent in test prep. I love helping students find meaning in their learning. So, you won't be bored. We will develop a plan each session, and work hard to complete it -- with stops along the way to try out our learning with games, visuals and fun!
I am a nationally known leader in teaching with technology, and you'll see that in each of our tutoring sessions, if you'd like. We are a team! That means I will maintain contact with your school teachers, and keep parents in the loop to make sure we have covered all that's needed to make my students a success! I have spent years working with national organizations for gifted students and also with students with learning disabilities. This gives me a special perspective on ALL learners, and helps me tailor the best course of study for all my students. In my spare time, I knit, love to visit new places, read about educational technology, spend time with my family, cook, and assist in training dogs to serve as assistance animals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My graduate level training includes 6 credits in special education. I have worked for 20 years motivating and inspiring students who have learning issues related to ADD/ADHD. We work on organization, planning both long and short term, and family support and independence. Students have shown marked improvement by having the support and scaffolding of a tutor to help them manage the challenges of these learning issues. I employ a number of strategies, which differ for each student, building on successes as we move forward.
Algebra can be tough. Together we'll find the specific areas where you're struggling and then concentrate our efforts to improve.
Learning how to study math is key to success. We'll work together to find a system and plan that works for YOU, and if you're willing to do the work, success can be yours.
