I specialize in tutoring teens and children who want better scores. If you want results and your son or daughter is willing to work, you've come to the right place. My sessions are rigorous and extremely effective. I'll help identify the core skills that your son or daughter needs to achieve the goal and I'll use specialized drills and practice to help your child build the skills for success.

In October 2012, I graduated (#1 GPA in class) with my MBA from Columbia University. In 2010, I scored 750 (top 2%) on the GMAT, the admissions test for business school. As an undergraduate, I studied at Stanford University.

Accounting

I actually love accounting. That may be hard to believe, since this subject can seem pretty boring and confusing when you are first learning it. I've excelled in Columbia University's toughest accounting courses and I know how tough and rewarding accounting can be. I can help you if you're willing to learn and do lots of practice problems, which is the ONLY way to really master accounting!

ACT English

I can help you raise your ACT English score. Unlike solo work in books (which we'll use as a tool) or group classes, I'll help you identify your biggest ACT testing weaknesses and then build a strategy to get the most points in the study time available.

ACT Math

If you need help raising your scores on the ACT or SAT, I can help. As an undergrad, I got a high SAT, earning entrance to Stanford University. For grad school, I beat the GMAT, earning a top 2% score. These tests are NOT IQ tests. They can be beaten with hard work and preparation. Email me to check my availability. Sincerely, Marc

ACT Reading

If you need help beating the ACT Reading, I can help. These tests are NOT IQ tests. They can be beaten if you know the tricks, the traps, and the proper study procedure. One of the keys is efficiency: most ACT study programs force you to study non-essential material which wastes time while not spending enough time on truly essential material. I'll help you focus and use your time on the study material which will make the biggest difference!

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the toughest high school subjects but I'll show you the keys to unlock the door to success. Together we'll find the specific areas in which you're struggling and then we'll target our efforts to improve first in the areas which will help you most. Great studying is all about efficiency and I'll help you improve if you're willing to do the work!

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of the toughest classes most high schoolers face: the rules are tough, rigid, and unforgiving. It can seem confusing and, let's face it, it can sometimes seem boring if math isn't your strong subject.

I can help you because I've been there. I struggled with it and then mastered it so I know how it feels to be confused and have a math headache and I know how it feels to work hard and get it right. Because I've been there, I can explain algebra 2 in a way that even a normal human (as distinct from a math human) can fully grasp the concepts and get problems correct. Let me help you turn your math headache into a math smile.

Astronomy

Astronomy has been one of my favorite subjects since I was a boy. And yet, the way it is taught in school is often extremely confusing, difficult, and dry. If you want to learn astronomy in a clearer and more intuitive way, let me help!

Economics

Economics should be fascinating and intuitive - we all deal with economics every hour of every day! And yet, most teachers and textbooks manage to turn it into a confusing, overly complicated, impractical mess. I graduated 1st in my class from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, emphasizing Finance and Economics. I've studied econ enough to SIMPLIFY it for you and help you focus on the essential ideas which you need to succeed. Let me help you leave the confusion behind!

English

I can help you succeed in English class. Whether you are a native speaker or ESL, I can help you focus on the essentials and raise your performance. English shouldn't be rocket science but too many teachers over-complicate it - let me help you simplify English so you can succeed with more results in less time.

Geology

Geology can be overwhelming. There is a ton of new vocabulary and often the geologists are using terms much differently than the rest of the world uses them! I can help you focus in on the essentials and make your study time efficient. Email me for help.

Geometry

Geometry challenges students for two reasons: it asks them to visualize figures and it asks them to write proofs. For students who are not visualizers or who are more creative and less logical, proofs can be exhausting and even terrifying. I can help your student become more comfortable with geometry. I'll do this by helping him/her understand the connections between figures and numbers and helping him/her learn how to prove simple propositions. Once the student gains basic comfort with these skills, geometry becomes much less stressful. Email me to arrange an introductory lesson.

GMAT

I scored 750 on the GMAT. So what, right? Here's the weird part: I only scored 450 on my first full-length GMAT practice test because I'd forgotten all of that high school math. How did I go from a 450 practice test to a 750 score (yes, a 300 point jump) on my first real test? I did it with my unique study method. Email me to arrange a lesson. If you don't live in the NY/CT area, no problem - I offer phone/internet lessons in a unique format for students outside of my local area.

Grammar

I can help you improve your grammar just enough to achieve your goals. If you want to understand the difference between a participle, a prepositional phrase, and a gerund, I can help you. But more likely, you want to learn ENOUGH to achieve a specific career or social goal. Whatever your goal, I'll help you with a plan to learn just what you need. For fun, here's a quiz. Is this sentence correct? "Jack and Jill sent a nice gift to Jennifer and I." What about this one? "Jack and me went to an amazing Indian restaurant in the village last night." Or this one: "John was feeling good about his performance on the test, but his girlfriend doubted it." What was wrong with each sentence and how should we correct it? Email me and I'll help you learn what you need to learn without smothering you in rules you'll never need.

GRE

The GRE is the most technical barrier which most people face as they consider a master's degree. If you majored in math as an undergraduate, you probably don't need me on the GRE math/quant section. But if you're a "poet" or a normal person and the math/quantitative section of the GRE gives you a math headache, I can help you raise your score much, much faster than studying by yourself or going to a mass production course where someone lectures at you in a room of 30 people.

Likewise, many people find the GRE verbal section difficult. Without the right study tips, you could study your whole life away without dramatically altering your score. Let me help you identify the key areas which will improve your verbal score so that your time is used efficiently.

Law

I love law. In fact, at Columbia I achieved an A+ in the advanced elective Business Law, taught by a revered Professor who is a former lawyer with the top New York City law firm Skadden Arps. Via in-person or online lessons, I can help you excel in your law class by efficiently understanding how the law works as well as memorizing the key facts without wasting time on non-essentials.

Literature

Literature should be a pure pleasure - a tour through the great writing of the ages. Too often it is an exercise in boredom and torture with books that make you want to claw your eyes out and teachers grading, seemingly, by opinion instead of objective merit. I can help you cut through the nonsense (f the book is a bore) or appreciate the true meaning of the masterpiece (if the books are well chosen). Email me to discuss how I can help you.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is one of the most powerful and most challenging programs which almost everyone must master today. Do you need a basic tour and some help mastering the most basic commands? I can help you get up to speed efficiently. Do you need to master Excel with advanced financial models, data tables, switches, and other advanced functions? I can help you gain the skills you need in the most time-efficient and interesting fashion.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Do you need PowerPoint for school or for work? Either way, I can share the skills I developed at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business to use PowerPoint's powerful features efficiently. If you take a normal course, they will melt your brain with excessive detail and way too much time on some things and way too little time on things which confuse you. I'll help you focus on the essentials, efficiently!

Microsoft Word

Word is essential to your performance in school or business and you need to have the key skills. On the other hand, most courses will bore you to tears with extremely lengthy "tutorials" which are long on blabber and short on critical tips and functions. I can help you quickly and efficiently get up to speed whether you just need an introduction or want to become an advanced user.

Physics

I love challenging physics problems and can help you develop the problem-solving skills needed to excel in physics. I studied physics at Stanford University under Nobel Prize-winning physicists but I was not a "natural" at either physics or higher math. I had to work hard and learn problem solving strategies. If you're a top student in other subjects but are struggling in physics, let's work together. I promise - you can learn the problem solving tactics needed for success in physics!

Prealgebra

Prealgebra can seem really tough! Believe me - I know! I struggled with it myself years ago - at first it wasn't easy for me. Luckily, I stuck with it and mastered all of the tricks to make it much easier for you than it was for me. I can help you conquer prealgebra if you're willing to work hard and believe in yourself.

Proofreading

You need someone with an eye for detail and a sense for acceptable academic and professional writing. Most proofreaders will either miss errors which will cost you or else will want to quibble about personal style. You need someone who can help you make your writing the very best it can be in an efficient time-frame. Email me and let's get started.

Reading

Whether you are learning ESL, special needs, or just want to take your reading to the next level, I can help. I scored in the 99th percentile on the verbal portion of the GMAT (admissions test for business school) and can help you read to get what you need whether it's basic skills or advanced comprehension for a college English major.

Religion

I've been studying religion for more than 20 years. In high school I attended an early morning seminary, studying the bible and other religious writings. After high school, I served a two year religious mission, deepening my knowledge of Christianity and other religions. In college, I studied world religions including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, and other belief systems. I have studied numerous translations of the Bible as well as the Koran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, the writings of Tzuang Che, the Upanishads, the writings of St. John of the Cross, the writings of Miguel de Molinas, the writings of the early Christian church fathers, and contemporary commentaries. I studied Latin (2 years) and Koine Greek (intensive 1 year Summer program). Whether you're studying for personal interest or for a high school or college course, I can help you understand the nuances of world religions.

SAT Math

The SAT Math is not a math test exactly. It's really a test of whether you know how to play the SAT Math game! I can help you play the game to WIN. Most people think their scores on the SAT Math are limited to their high school math grades. Not true! Even if you've struggled in your math classes, you can significantly raise your SAT Math score with the right training and the right coach. Let me help you reach your SAT Math potential so you can get into the college you deserve!

SAT Reading

I can help you put your best foot forward, potentially earning a SAT Reading score hundreds of points higher than you would have scored without assistance. I start with your present level and your goals and we make a plan. My training includes vocabulary, grammar, and specific test strategies to help you get your best possible score on the SAT Reading. If you already have books you're studying, we can use those OR we can use my materials. I look forward to helping you get the score you deserve!

Statistics

Statistics can seem brutally difficult. The rules are often counter intuitive and after all of the time schools spend on algebra and geometry, statistics can feel like a foreign language with its own alien logic. I can help. Having studied statistics in college and again at the master's level (at Columbia University), I can help simplify statistics so you can succeed.

Study Skills

Diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities in college, I learned how to compensate with study techniques and skills I discovered through years of work and study. At Columbia University, I graduated 1st (# 1 G.P.A.) in my master's degree class with a 9.99/10.0 G.P.A. I can help your student improve with study techniques and skills that work.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the key to so many things: ACT/SAT/GMAT/gifted testing/job interviews, you name it. What most people don't realize is (1) there are only about 500-1,000 special "critical" vocab words which make the biggest difference between a weak and strong vocabulary and (2) there are study methods which employ music and humor to make memorizing the key works MUCH easier. Let me help you EFFICIENTLY boost your vocabulary by studying the right words with methods which will make those words memorable.

World History

Let me help you conquer World History by focusing on the most important elements. History is often taught as a massive data dump and this impedes learning because humans have trouble memorizing information out of context. Together, we'll create context by identifying what I like to call the "core timeline". From this timeline, it's much easier to remember specific events and grasp their significance. We'll take you from confusion to comprehension.

Writing

Writing is a "bottleneck" skill which determines how seriously you are taken in everything else you do. I can help you tune up your writing skills or take them to the next level. Whether it is for high school, business, or college, let's work together to help you improve your writing efficiently.

Education

Stanford University (Physics)

Columbia University (MBA)

Outstanding Teacher, Tutor, and Friend When I decided to undertake the GRE exam, I knew that doing practice problems on my own was not going to prepare me for everything the test could throw at me. Truth is, I always believed that I was poor at math and better at English. During my first session with Marc, he debunked my theory. Learning math by using his methods and materials was not only remarkably effective, but, for the first time ...
