As a Special Education Teacher I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of students throughout my career, from pre-school to high school. I enjoy working closely with classroom teachers and families. Most recently I have worked with students in 2nd through 11th grade, tutoring in all subjects.

This has challenged my creativity to discover the key to each student's success. For some students learning can be a struggle. I like to think outside the box, and consider a student's learning style to build confidence and harness the potential of the learner. My goal is to present the material, building slowly to create a foundation and then make connections to extend the student's thinking process and ultimately develop their own strategies for success.

I am also a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired and am fluent in American Sign Language. Using simple signs has sometimes proved helpful in cuing young students as they look for ways to understand and build new knowledge, especially in Reading and Math.

I am currently working for New London Public Schools, and have been fingerprinted and had background checks through the district. I hold Connecticut Professional Educator Certificates with endorsements in Comprehensive Special Education PreK-grade 12, and also Hearing Impaired PreK-grade 12.

Please contact me so we can see if my skills are a fit for your needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I currently hold certification as a Professional Educator Comprehensive Special Education PreK-12, and Certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired PreK-12.

I have worked with students with Aspergers Syndrome supporting them through direct service and also as a consultant directing their paraprofessionals and offering support to teachers with students placed within the typical class population. This was at the elementary and middle school levels.

While working at a private school, I worked with school administrators, staff and students to create a “culture of acceptance” in the school setting from the top down. Modeling acceptance, patience and appreciation to the general education student population promoted positive peer interactions.

I also have participate in continuing education classes related to Aspergers Syndrome and presented workshops for staff within the school system.

Autism

I currently hold certification as a Professional Educator Comprehensive Special Education PreK-12, and Certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired PreK-12.

For 15 years I specialized in working with young children diagnosed with Autism. I worked in New Jersey in a public school, and later when I moved to Connecticut I worked through the Birth to Three Program here in Southeastern Connecticut and also at Connecticut College Children's Program.

I have taken numerous continuing education and professional development workshops dedicated to supporting the learning of children with this diagnosis, and their families. I have also used these skills for supporting some students in the typical elementary classroom setting (regular education), supplying direct service or consultant support.

Dyslexia

I currently hold certification as a Professional Educator Comprehensive Special Education PreK-12, and Certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired PreK-12.

Throughout my career I have worked with students with a variety of learning needs. I have held positions as a classroom teacher and consultant overseeing strategies to address their learning needs.

Having struggled with dyslexia I am sensitive to the challenges that learning to read, write, and spell present. I have a strong multi-sensory approach to teaching phonics and am familiar with reading strategies, to improve fluency and comprehension. Using outlines, and graphic organizers helps the student organize their thoughts and succeed in writing.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have supported special education students in schools at all grade levels from Pre-K through high school and in all subject areas. I also have tutored and supported typical/regular education students in K through 8th grade subjects.

I like to find ways to present subject concepts so that students can be successful and enjoy learning. As one of my high school teacher's encouraged us, "it's as easy as Duck Soup!".. It was her enthusiasm for teaching extremely difficult math concepts that helped me realize that much of our success is in our attitude, approach, and perseverance to succeed.

I currently hold certification as a Professional Educator Comprehensive Special Education PreK-12, and Certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired PreK-12.

Elementary Math

As a certified teacher, I have team-taught and supported students in mathematics classes from elementary through high school.

Hard Of Hearing

I currently hold certification as a Professional Educator Comprehensive Special Education PreK-12, and Certification as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired PreK-12.

I was employed by the American School for the Deaf, West Hartford as a Sign Language Instructor, and Itinerant Teacher from 1994-2007.

From 1982- the present I have worked as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired in 3 states- NJ, CO, CT.

Phonics

Included as part of a position I held as a Special Education Consultant for a local private school, I also provided educational workshops and monitored teachers in their instruction of the Bradley Phonics Program in grades K-3. But third grade is not where phonics should end. Carrying phonics through to 5th grade just continues to give a student strategies for discovering new vocabulary, and understanding how to use the dictionary's printed explanation of pronunciation through phonics.

Prealgebra

PreAlgebra and Algebra can be difficult, but once you've learned the rules and the tricks ... it's a breeze. Math is my favorite subject, and I've helped many students change their, "I hate math" to "I LOVE Math!"

I look forward to helping your child enjoy math and do well!

Reading

As a Special Education teacher I have often supported students in reading skill development. I feel establishing a love for reading is very important. Rather than making reading a chore, approaching it as a mystery and unlocking the clues by learning what to look for makes reading fun.
I am familiar with working on skills such as previewing, predicting, scanning, rephrasing, vocabulary building, fluency, making connections, think-alouds, visualization, etc. Combining these tools will give students strategies for comprehension.

Sign Language

I was employed by the American School for the Deaf, West Hartford as a Sign Language Instructor, and Itinerant Teacher from 1994-2007.

I am presently working with New London School District teaching sign language to a family whose child is using signs as a support to his communication program.

I was employed as a Teacher of the Deaf from 1982-2000 where I used a Total Communication approach to all instructional areas in my classroom.

Special Needs

I have been employed since 1982 as a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired in grades PreK, 1,2,3, and later provided support in the classroom or resource room for grades 4-12 in all subject areas, for both deaf and hearing special education students.

I have been both a participant and presenter in many courses dealing with special needs students, strategies, and teaching methods.

Study Skills

Throughout my career I have worked as a classroom teacher and consultant with students with a variety of learning needs. I have found that practicing good study habits, learning how to set goals, manage time, and prepare for tests, are all study skills that maximize a student's success.

Swimming

I became a certified Water Safety Instructor and worked at all of the Bergen County New Jersey Girl Scout camps as a swimming instructor and later as a Waterfront Director. My certification has since lapsed, but my skills and enthusiasm for swimming have not.

I love to swim and still do at the Mystic Y. I enjoy teaching all levels from children to adults. Learning to swim is not only a wonderful life-long activity, but learning how to swim can save your life!

if you're looking for someone you can feel comfortable with, supported in your goals in the water, and take you through the strokes... I'd be happy to teach you how to swim.

Vocabulary

Throughout my career I have worked as a classroom teacher and resource room teacher supporting students and their skill development including expanding vocabulary to improve a students' writing and communication skills.
