Virginia Tech - BSME (Mechanical Engineeri)
State Univ of New York at Binghamton (Master's)
I am a twelve year resident of Mystic, CT. I was born and raised in Fairfield, CT and attended Lauralton Hall for a classical college prep education. I completed a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and then went to work with IBM. During my tenure there, I studied for, and completed, a Master's degree, also in Mechanical Engineering.
My work has involved various areas of machine design, computer simulation, and system and process optimization (a lot of Math!). I love Math, and the Sciences, and have a lot of applied experience with them. This helps me to find more and varied ways to explain the foundational aspects of Math and Science in problem solving. In my schooling, I was also very well trained in Literature, English Grammar, Writing and the Arts. I am a voracious reader and test in the 99th percentile in Reading Speed and Comprehension. I am currently writing a book (semi-autobiographical).
I am a skilled teacher. With IBM, I taught engineers how to use computer software in their own environment to solve problems of design, or build, or process application. This involved my going to their workplace, quickly understanding their environment and design constraints, and then discovering a way to work within those boundaries to communicate solutions and new techniques. Every interaction or assignment was one-of-a-kind, and I loved the challenge! My feedback scores were always exemplary.
I have been told that I have a special skill at being able to explain complex ideas with simplicity, tailored to the audience’s knowledge set.
I have taught CCD at my church for ten years, for a variety of ages: Kindergartners and early grades, as well as 7th through 10th graders. I love it, and my students respond well to my teaching style and skills. I've had students come up to me years later, to thank me for their experience in my class. I am especially adept at tailoring the style to the student's development level.
I also teach Swimming at the local Y. I have many young students, and two Adult classes (beginners and intermediates). Most of the parents of the children I've taught have made a special effort to commend my teaching, and have requested my classes for their children's subsequent lessons – often rescheduling their children's lessons, just to be in my class! I have been told that I am extremely patient, very structured, committed, and flexible with different types of learners, ages, and abilities. My adult students have often told me how surprised they were at the progress they've made, after years of trying to learn to swim. I am an extremely effective teacher. I recently worked with an autistic adult who was terrified to leave the wall in the shallow end of the pool. With much encouragement and patience, I was able to get him to swim the entire length of the pool, and jump in at the deep end! He was amazed. Although I only have worked at the Y for a year, my supervisor has asked me to get special Certification in order to teach other instructors how to teach.
I am deeply committed to the success of my clients. If a student needs help understanding a difficult concept, I will go to great lengths to understand his or her knowledge set to work within that environment to lead the student to clarity. I will try dozens of ways to get an idea across, to facilitate comprehension. I can help with study skills, test taking skills, reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. I love kids and nothing is more gratifying to me than to give a student the gift of learning!

Melita has a lot of patience and is good at explaining things. She has a good idea of what my daughter's strengths and weaknesses are to help her figure out what is needed to best prepare her for exams. My daughter has a lot more confidence after Melita has tutored. I find that she is easy to reach when needed even if it's last minute.
Melita has been an amazing tutor for my son. He really struggles in writing, and she is very insightful to what is blocking the process. She's great about updating me every day with what they work on, and this is very helpful since my son does not! He enjoys working with Melita, and she has a kind, gentle approach. Melita worked with my son for the month of June for 2 hours, 5 days a week, and the growth was amazing. She was really able to help him understand that he was a good writer, and that he needed to be open to writing. Having my son write in a journal every day was key for him. It made writing less stressful, and taught him how to just flow, and not worry about each word! He real enjoyed working with Melita, and happily went every day!
Melita is very knowledgeable, capable, personable and diligent. My wife was very worried about her college English courses due to English being her third language. Working with Melita helped her to get A's on all her English classes and she eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude. We want to thank Melita for all her help and recommend her as an excellent and hard working tutor.
My daughter Stephanie has been very happy with Melita. She is very patient with her and shows her the processes needed to methodically solve problems. It is going very well!!
Kids are working hard and the schedule is working out great! The kids look forward to seeing her and appreciate her knowledge and her positivity!
We relocated to the SE Connecticut area from out-of-state where our son had attended a highly rated private school for the gifted. His new school did not offer specific coursework in foreign languages or technology, and did not offer science lessons on a daily basis. After reviewing many resumes on WyzAnt, we found Metila, a very experienced tutor in those areas. Additionally, she displayed a great breadth of experience in many other areas.
Melita was everything her resume displayed and more. She was knowledgeable, resourceful, compassionate, yet demanding. She was able to light his intellectual fires, once again being excited about learning. Melita was able to motivate him in the same manner his previous school did. As other educational needs arose at his new school, she quickly adapted her planned lesson to assist us to get him back on track.
Her crowning achievement was guiding our third grade son to create his own website which he presented to his classmates and teachers. It was so well received that the head of the school requested a special showing.
We highly recommend Melita as a tutor for any age child. She is a natural teacher who is able to effectively tune into a child and motivate them to the best of their natural abilities. We feel like she has become a family member.
Melita came to the house to help tutor my son in Pre-Calculus when we really needed her most. She was quick to respond and worked around my son's schedule. She was kind and patient and seemed to be a life line to me and my son when he really needed help with an on-line Pre-Calculus course. So far he is doing well and Melita took the time to help answer his questions and give him the skills and confidence to succeed. We are very grateful to Melita for her skills, patience and willingness to be flexible with our schedule.
Melita wasted no time getting to work. She knew the subject well, AP calculus, and did a good job explaining the material. We were very happy with her in all aspects of the job.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While I have taught and tutored adults, college level and HS subjects, I am also well qualified to teach K-6, specifically math, language arts and science. I have worked with youngsters, aged 5 through 12 on math, reading, physical science, and swimming. I am well versed in the subject matter, of course, but also have a great deal of experience with the age group. I've specifically tutored in 2nd grade math, 4th grade math, 6th grade math, K and 2nd grade science, and K and 3rd grade reading, as some examples. I am very patient and relate well to the different development phases of this age group. I have taught swimming to over 500 children, aged 6 through 12, over the last few years!
As a mechanical engineer, I am a proficient user of various softwares and computer platforms. I worked for IBM for 18 years, using a variety of their software applications - including Lotus Notes, VMWare, WebSphere, and engineering application software like ANSYS, CATIA Elfini, ABAQUS, and ENOVIA. I have also used (and debugged) the AIX software set. In my daily engineering work, I use extensively Microsoft products such as EXCEL, WORD, and POWERPOINT. I have set up new computers, loaded (and debugged) software applications and user tools, such as Skype, virus protection and Media software. I have installed (and debugged!) many peripheral components, such as printers, wireless pointers, hard drives, recording devices, etc. While I am not Microsoft certified, I have managed my own suite of computers and software tools for many years.
My computer knowledge is general and quite current.
I scored 100% on both the Word and Excel tests, completing each in less than 2 minutes.
As an engineer, I use Math - in all its forms - on an everyday basis. I have studied advanced Maths, and applied them through my Masters level classes. My qualification tests for wyzant Maths were all perfect scores, although there is no test for pre Algebra. PreAlgebra is an introduction to some of the basic concepts of number theory and variables and I am confident that - with my teaching skills and experience with the more advanced subject matter, that I am qualified to tutor pre Algebra.
I learned to swim when I was two years old, living at the ocean with my eight siblings! At aged 14, I had completed all of my Lifesaving certificates but was required to wait until I was 15 to get certified. I began teaching swimming classes at age 15 and continued for several years. I swam competitively myself from an early age through my first year of college, and still swim recreationally today. I taught my husband to swim and both children - who are proficient competitive swimmers. I have most recently taught at the Mystic Y for 10 Program sessions, now (about a year and a half). I teach both children and Adults, both Beginner swimmers, and accomplished swimmers. I teach private lessons, when it benefits the student, and have taught beginner classes as large as 11 students at a time. I am currently teaching a triathlete training class, with 15 on the roster. I have taught students with a variety of disabilities, including learning difficulties, autism, hearing problems, and physical limitations. It is very rewarding and I love it! I receive many, many compliments on my teaching abilities; I have been able to get children and adults with strong fears into the deep end and swimming independently. I have had adults who tried lessons for years unsuccessfully, learn to swim successfully with me. Many parents have told me that their child has progressed much faster in their lessons with me, than ever before!
I teach body mechanics in the water, using exercises to ease discomfort for new swimmers (the class is called Fear No More). For early swimmers, I teach stroke technique, efficient breathing, and strength exercises. For accomplished swimmers, I improve strokes for efficiency and speed, and teach various training and racing methods.
