As the owner and principal tutor of a Moodus, CT, based tutoring company, I was profiled in a recent article. Here is what they had to say about me:
Mr. C. runs "...a local business in Moodus that provides tutoring, special needs services and enrichment activities." Owner Dave C. possesses a 'passion for learning that is infectious and allows students to get past the unreal educational world and see the real power of the material.'
As a teacher, Dave C. sees 'our educational system as stagnant, based on ideas from the 1950s of providing industry with large numbers of workers.'"
As a tutor, I focus on supporting learners and their families to find the ability to make the leap to the 21st century by finding their passion and assisting them with finding their success in educational settings. The school system is based on a one-size-fits-all curriculum where the main goal is to produce students who can follow directions and pass the state approved testing requirements so that the district can continue to get funded by the state the following year. Unfortunately, this model, although it worked in the 1950s, where only about 5-10% of high school graduates went to college, and the remaining 90-95% only needed to do manual labor, now, we need students who can think independently and be problem solvers, using their individual and unique talents to come up with new ways to solve problems. As a tutor, I see it as my job to work with the students (and parents) to help them navigate the current educational system while gaining the skills that will help them advance in the economic climate of the 21st century.
