Hello and thank you for browsing my tutor profile!

My name is Becca, and I am a highly creative and educated individual with a passion for inspiring students the way I was inspired by several teachers when I was growing up and attending college.

I received by Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University in 2005, where my concentration was in English Literature and British Studies. I had the opportunity to study and live abroad in London, England during my junior year and this added a wealth of knowledge to my education.

I graduated in 2013 from BridgeTEFL online with my certification in teaching English as a foreign language. I currently tutor students in ESL who wish to improve their conversation, grammar, and pronunciation skills. I tailor my lessons to the interests of the student as well as their specific difficulties and needs.

I currently music direct and teach musical theater classes at several local children's theaters and dance studios in addition to teaching private lessons. I have 25 years of performing arts experience and over 10 years of semi-professional music and theater performing experience. In addition, I have played the piano for over 20 years and was professionally trained for 10 years.

I tutor beginning and intermediate piano students ages 7 and up. A lot of my piano students are adults who always wanted to learn. I accept special needs students for piano, and currently teach students with autism, dyslexia, and ADHD. I have created curriculum and methods that works with special needs students. I teach voice students of all levels beginning at age 10, 11, or 12 depending upon the maturity and focus of the student. My voice lessons are technique focused with special attention to connecting to the emotion of the music, and the material I choose for my students is selected from the musical theater and classical libraries. I teach regular weekly lessons as well as audition preparations. I am available to travel to the homes of my students to teach lessons, or conduct lessons in my own home studio.

My tutoring style is very precise but also relaxed. I believe that in order for students to fully learn, they must be given ample time to practice the lessons they are taught, so my lesson plans always allow for a beneficial practice and production period through the course of the lesson. I encourage questions and discussion, as I do not feel that anyone learns very well by just being lectured and only experiencing "teacher to student" interaction.

The most important thing you could know about me is that I am not only knowledgeable in my subject areas, but I am very excited about these fields and love sharing them with others.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have, and I would love the opportunity to work with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach English as a foreign language by Bridge TEFL, and I also have a grammar endorsement from that company. I received an English Literature degree from Florida State University and graduated with over a 3.5 GPA in my concentration. When tutoring ESL students, I focus on equally teaching the four elements of English, including speaking, writing, reading, and listening.

Piano

I have tutored beginning students in how to read music and play the piano. I began taking piano lessons in 1990 and continued through 2001, winning multiple regional and state awards for my performance. I have accompanied other performers and have played for church services. I am able to play by ear as well as by reading music.

Sight Singing

I learned how to read music at the age of three and am a classically trained vocalist. I have performed as a soloist and with numerous groups where I have had to sing directly from reading the music on the page. I have given brief tutoring to one student on how to read music and sing this way.

Theatre

I have nearly 20 years experience as an actor in leading roles, supporting roles, and chorus roles for both dramatic and musical theatre. I have performed regionally and semi-professionally and have taken many workshops over the years with experts in the field to hone my craft. I am a musical theatre teacher at a community theatre in my area.

Voice (Music)

I was classically trained in voice beginning at age 5 from two maestros, and sang with various regional and national choirs. I have nearly 20 years of experience in musical theatre, and 10 years experience as a semi-professional jazz/standards singer. I have coached vocal students to prep them for musical auditions. I am a Musical Theatre teacher at a community theatre in my area.
