After obtaining an MA in Educational Counseling and teaching certification in K-8, I started counseling adolescents and young adults. I was a middle school counselor and health teacher for eight years at an independent school, until the economic downturn in 2009 resulted in my position being eliminated. I then worked with ninth through twelfth grade students as they prepared for college. I taught resume writing, career exploration, college readiness and assisted students and families with the entire application process, including essay writing, college decision-making, filling out application materials, the FAFSA and financial aid. When that grant ended, I worked at another grant position helping special needs students find vocational and academic services as they exit high school. That grant period ended in June and recently, I have been substitute teaching in elementary schools.
As a result of my experiences and background, I am able to work effectively with students of all ages and with their families. I focus on their learning style and interests to present lessons in the most effective way. I help students focus on the material they need to learn and if requested, teach time management, the importance of practice and preparation and test-taking strategies. Because of my background as a teacher and counselor, I am able to work with at-risk students and those who might have barriers preventing academic success.
