I have over 20 years experience helping student improve their performance in math courses and standardized tests. I have an BS in Engineering with Math minor and also an MBA but more importantly, I have found that many of my 'secrets' of success can be easily passed on.
The process that I use to help students maximize their potential involves customizing a program to the specific needs of each person. Many of the large tutoring businesses teach identical systems to everyone. Although there are certainly processes where following a specific procedure is helpful, in the bigger picture, I have found much greater success with adjusting the study program to fit the needs of the student.
We can meet at your home or at libraries or coffee shops - again this usually depends upon where the student finds they perform best. Hours are flexible. Bob is an exceptional tutor.
He has the patience to help English major type thinkers really look at and translate what a mathematical equation is really asking. He doesn't whiz through lessons, imparting 'short-cuts' that evaporate by the time I get home. He gives his pupils through room to think through something themselves, make a few mistakes, then work with him toward an Ah Ha! solution.
I shall certainly seek his assistance again as I progress through the next levels of excel.
I highly recommend Bob as a personable and very helpful tutor.
My son worked with Bob for a couple of months prior to his ISEE. Both enjoyed it and learned a lot of useful tips. He scored very well too! Thank you Bob!
Liza says she's very grateful to you for showing her how "to do the work and not rely on calculator." Thanks so much!
Our son says Bob is a great tutor and has really helped to prepare him for his statistics class. We are very pleased with our son's progress in statistics. Bob has helped him understand and comprehend the challenging material. Great job, Bob! Thanks!!
Bob is an awesome tutor. I contacted WyAnt just 3 weeks before my son's scheduled ISEE exam. My son's math skills were weak compared to his verbal and reading sections. Bob gave him lots of confidence and had faith that he had the skills to improve his scores if he'd slow his pace and relax during the practice exams. It worked! Bob really came through for me (and my son, of course).
Bob is very patient with very good knowledge of math and how to get good score when take the test. My son learned a lot from him.
I have been so pleased with bob that I recommended that my wife have bob help her, what a great choice and excellent company you have. It was so difficult finding a tutor for my son until I found wyzant. I was totally surprised that some of the places I called for tutoring did not have anyone available to teach geometry. Thank you wyzant for being the leader of the pack my son has a A in geometry.
Our son is taking Calculus at Quinnipiac Univesity. Math has never been his strong point and Bob is helping him with his math. Bob is always on time and meets our son on campus. This is a big plus since our son doesn't have a car. Bob has determined how best our son learns, and develops his tutoring to meet our son's need. Our son tells us Bob is patient and able to answer all his questions. He can explain the problems to him so he can do the problems on his test. Our son likes Bob as a tutor and doesn't mind meeting with him. Even though our son is in college, Bob keeps us updated on our son's progress. Overall he is a great tutor and I would highly recommend him to help your child.
Bob B. has been extremely patient with me as I learn about Stats. I would highly recommend him for your next tutoring session.
Bob was great. He was able to allow me to connect so I was able to understand the concepts I needed for my mid term!
I met with Bob for GRE math tutoring. He was excellent and I feel like he definitely helped me improve my score. He was really able to break things down for me and explain everything clearly. He was able to schedule sessions quickly and worked around my schedule. We met at libraries and coffee shops that were convenient for me. He was always on time and very professional. I would highly recommend him and would schedule more sessions with him should I need tutoring in the future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For most students, algebra is the first step into 'higher math'. There are a number of new concepts and thought processes that are needed to successfully take this step. The best process here is usually and steady and consistent review of the subject matter combined with many practice problems until a solid level of comfort is reached.
Calculus is another big step in the progression of a math student. Sub-topics such as derivatives, differentiation, and maximization can be very intimidating if it feels like the instructor is moving through them too quickly. Often, the opportunity to work one on one within these concepts - and talk them over until there is a real understanding - makes a huge difference.
Standardized tests can be intimidating for many people. However, they can be successfully navigated via two steps: a basic review of the underlying content; and a thorough review of the appropriate test taking techniques for the exam in question.
The LSAT is a very challenging test. It is important to realize the the creators of this test realize that many smart students will be taking this test and their goal is to sort the relatively smart from the extraordinarily smart. Thus, the lengthy test with many difficult sections. My experience has been that the the logical reasoning and logic games sections are the areas where practice results in the most improvement (reading comprehension take longer to change).
In the logic areas, especially the games, there are a number of techniques that if learned and applied correctly, will dramatically change your score.
Standardized tests can be intimidating for many people. However, they can be successfully navigated via two steps: a basic review of the underlying content; and a thorough review of the appropriate test taking techniques for the exam in question. Compared to the SAT, the ACT has less Vocabulary and an added Science section. Take this into account when deciding on SAT, ACT, or both.
Growing up as a sports fan, I always gravitated to statistics. In school and professionally, I have also had many roles where my propensity to dig into stats has been helpful. Usually, I can take the strange terms and turns them into normal language for those who are struggling. This lead to many "Ah-Ha!" moments.
