As a student who is at present pursuing a Master’s Degree in Mathematics with Teacher Certification for Grades 7-12, I am eager to share my passion for learning with those seeking academic assistance. Since graduating from Smith College, I have worked as a math and English tutor for five different organizations including the Columbia University Academic Resource Center, Blue Tomato Learning Center, Tutor Jam, Parliament Tutors, and Tutor Doctor. I have also worked for an educational consulting group in Fairfield designing computerized and paper-based standardized tests. I would love to continue helping kindergarten through university level students with their studies.
My interest in teaching was sparked by my involvement in a nonprofit organization called Let’s Get Ready during the summer of 2008. Through Let’s Get Ready, I served as an SAT math coach and college application essay editor for a class consisting of rising high school seniors from the inner-city. I discovered that in order to be an influential instructor, one must refrain from a “spoon-feeding” pedagogical technique and give lessons in a way that engages students and fosters independence in them by keeping them active. I firmly believe that a great education begins with effective communication between teachers and students. I constantly reassured my math students at Let’s Get Ready that I would not judge them for making mistakes, nor would I get impatient with them if they were struggling with the material. As a result, they felt at ease asking me questions whenever they needed certain ideas to be clarified. I can assure you that I will create an environment that is just as friendly and comfortable for any students I am asked to tutor one-on-one through WyzAnt.
