Hi, I'm Corie B and I feel really terrific about sharing my expertise in mathematics with students of all individual needs. I graduated from Hunter College with a Degree in Mathematics and went on to study Mathematics as it relates to Education. I received my MEd from Richmond College and began my teaching career. I believe what sets me apart from all other professionals in my field is my diversified background as an educator. With over 27 years of hands-on successful teaching, tutoring, coaching, and mentoring, both students and teachers, I feel that I am exactly the kind of tutor you need to stay motivated and focused. Learning always takes place when a student is present with the work. I have consistently trained my students to succeed in mathematics as a result of my understanding of the teaching-learning process, I teach for understanding, using instructional tools and technology, when applicable, to meet the need of multiple intelligences. My self-motivation, multi-tasking skills, dynamic personality along with proficiency in a wide variety of math courses and age levels, is what enables me to significantly contribute to your educational needs.

I have come to understand that the method of discussion, rather than lecturing or dictating, is a highly beneficial style of teaching. When students construct their own learning experiences, they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities. Lastly, my hope is to motivate my students in ascertaining their inner strengths and abilities and discover what truly inspires them!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I love math, especially algebra. In order to understand algebra, students need to have an understanding of prealgebra. This can sometimes create a problem since there are so many variables that contribute to one's success or failure in this math course. If a child is lost at the beginning of this class and doesn't get the language of algebra, or how to solve equations and inequalities, or cannot understand how to solve an algebraic word problem, it will be very difficult for him/her to go on to more difficult work. The student will be faced with feelings of frustration and disappointment.

I believe that, with the right tutor, all the work that isn't known, will be learned and understood and the gaps that had existed will begin to narrow.

Elementary (K-6th)

Hi, I really love to work with students in grades 1-6. I am Certified in Elementary Education and have spent the last 5 years working with small groups of children, ages 7 through 12, narrowing or filling in the gaps that have caused academic failure in math and/or reading. Although I cannot guarantee results, over the last 5 years nearly all of my students have achieved an increase in their grades. I have been able to accomplish this by narrowing, or filling in the gaps that existed in the student's math and/or reading background. Since these gaps have caused the student's educational foundation to break down, they must be dealt with throughout the tutoring relationship. It's important to understand that children have an incredible ability to learn - their minds are like sponges, taking in knowledge like a sponge takes in water, and this is what makes working with the young population such a rewarding experience.

Terrific tutor... — My son, a ninth grade honor student who was struggling with Geometry, elected to get a tutor to help him. We hired Corie B. back in Jan. or Feb. 2010, and she has been tutoring my son since in Honors Geometry. She is accommodating to his schedule, and always arrives upbeat, patient, well prepared and is excellent at communicating challenging terms and concepts to my son. Since working with Co ...
