I am an established, experienced Math, Science and Test Prep tutor. I cover elementary school through high school level math, including homeschooling assistance. I tutor physical science and chemistry. Test preparation includes the math/science portions of the SAT, ACT, GRE, GED, GMAT, ASVAB, ISEE, SSAT, TEAS, Praxis and more.
My goal is to connect with the student at THEIR level. We start by going over the fundamentals of the subject, the basics of problem solving and work from there to foster independent thinking. I use varied approaches when the student is "stuck." I am friendly, patient and very persistent. I can assist with classwork and homework. I will assign supplemental work to advance in the subject area as needed or desired. My goal - to ultimately work myself out of a job!
For standardized test preparation - we review the most frequently tested concepts, go over proven test-taking tips and strategies, and practice exams. Together we develop a strategy that best fits your strengths to the test and minimizes any weakness or anxiety. By building skills, we build confidence and maximize your score.
I tailor tutoring sessions to your needs. I love teaching, and really love seeing students continuing and excelling on their own! Contact me for more information.
Want to save money on tutoring or test prep? Get together with a few friends. Meeting together is a great incentive. A group of 2 to 6 students still provides most all the benefits of personally individualized teaching, and at a steeply discounted price. Ask me about it!
Special Discount for ASVAB prep - thank you. Please accept a 20% discount off my base rate.
Beyond understanding the required math, scoring well on the ACT has to do conquering those careless errors, because there is no partial credit on the ACT, - and being able to read and understand word problems. I can help on both fronts. I review the math covered by the ACT - algebra, geometry, data and statistics, and some trig/advanced alg 2. Even for those who have not yet had alg 2/trig, the ACT is very predictable, so we can prepare a student for the types of questions the ACT asks in those areas. More importantly, I teach a method to read word problems and quickly and confidently write down the equation to be solved. No more having your head spin wondering, "what are they asking me?". We'll build basic skills and talk about strategies to move through the test to maximize your score. Many students find the ACT science the hardest part of the test. Not only is it at the end of a very long test, some students find science to be hard - which adds to the anxiety, AND you really have to rush to get through the 7 passages and 40 questions in only 35 minutes. Sounds impossible! The key is knowing some strategies to manage your time and being familiar with the types of questions and answer formats the ACT presents. I can help you get through it! Please see the reviews on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good match for your tutoring needs.
In Algebra 1, students are really learning the art of problem solving. Compared to previous math, problems get more complicated, both in structure and presentation. Logic skills are required in addition to the arithmetic skills taught up to this point. Complications arise when the foundational math is not strong, and/or there is difficulty in understanding the questions (often presented as word problems). Whether you need remedial help, or are looking to get ahead, I can help! I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Starting with your current math, or going back as far as needed, we will build skill and confidence in algebra 1. Algebra II can be tough! Many unfamiliar concepts are introduced as students are being prepared for trig and calculus. Any weaknesses in previous math courses are magnified, since these now are mere tools as the subject matter advances. I can help! I've had much success tutoring algebra II. I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We break down concepts into their simplest blocks, and I strive for students to understand WHY they are doing what they are doing, not just HOW. This leads to a deeper understanding and a new ease of application of the skills! Please take a look at the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you!
Thank you for your interest in the ASVAB. In appreciation and recognition of your commitment, I am happy to offer a 10% discount off my base rate, in addition to any WyzAnt discounts you qualify for. (Extended travel surcharge may still apply.) My focus on ASVAB preparation is on the Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge sections. Particularly if it has been a long time since you've taken a math test, I can quickly get you up to speed in the most frequently tested math strands. I can identify weak areas and teach the concepts in a way to make them understandable and memorable, helping you reach your goals.
Chemistry can be a tough subject, because it introduces a whole new vocabulary, has difficult concepts, and couples all that with quite a bit of math. I hold a Ph.D. in chemistry and am currently tutoring several students in general/honors/AP chemistry. I have been told I am very patient and can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. High School Placement Exams such as the COOP and HSPT can be nerve wracking for students. These tests are fast paced, and the timed element can add anxiety. As a successful tutor experienced in high school and middle school math, as well as general standardized test prep, I tutor the math portion of these exams. I help students by building skills and confidence; going over the most tested math concepts; and teaching strategies to lower anxiety and be prepared for the timed aspect of the test. Additionally I can help students organize their study for the other portions of the exam.
I enjoy working with youngsters, exploring the world of math and what it can do, building their skills and igniting that curiosity about the world around them and the all math applications that can be done. Whether you are looking for remedial help, or looking to advance a gifted child, I can help. I always have an eye towards building students’ confidence in the math at their level, but also preparing them for the math to come. I teach students WHY they are doing what they need to do, not just procedures and rules, to deepen and broaden their understanding of concept. In this way, skills are transferable, no matter how that skill is stretched or tested as the subject advances. I love talking to children about their world, hearing their questions, helping them discover the answers, and prodding them to more questions. Elementary science should initiate a curiosity and an enthusiasm, -- and I like to help them understand, --- so they can ask more questions! We can work from their textbook and worksheets, online materials, or come up with our own! My background in science (PhD in chemistry) qualifies me in science, but my ability to relate on their level makes me a good tutor. I have successfully helped students with the math portion of their GED. In addition to my tutoring, I volunteer weekly at a local learning center, and have worked with students of all levels towards their GED. I help raise skills and confidence for the online test, tailoring sessions to your needs. Whether you are of high school age or returning to studies after a long break, I can help. I've been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Along with strengthening the fundamentals, I teach a way to read problems so you can consistently get the equation needed to be solved. I have helped many students overcome their stumbling blocks and anxieties, and make quick progress. I have had experience tutoring geometry and preparing students for the New York State Regents exam. Geometry can be difficult for many students, since the abstract nature of the subject, and the logical reasoning required, is very different from previous math study. Additionally, any weaknesses in algebra stymie students tremendously, since algebra is a mere tool used in geometry. I address all of this. I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Please take a look at the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you.
I tutor the math portions of the test - the quantitative section and integrated reasoning. We review necessary math skills, and strengthen fundamentals so you are equipped for the data sufficiency questions, and I give you the tools needed to quickly arrive at answers without the calculator. I teach a way to read the word problems to correctly set up the question being asked. We work on timing as well, making sure you are solving only enough of the problem to answer the question.
I have prepared students for the math portion of the revised general GRE test with much success. The math content is high school level, similar to that found on the SAT, but the question format differs and can be quite unnerving if you are not prepared. Unfamiliar question types include the quantitative comparisons, and questions where more than one answer is correct, - and you have to find them all. I work with students in several fronts. We review content; I teach students how to read word problems to set up the right equation; I detail a method for the quantitative comparisons that takes out some of the confusion; and we work for accuracy and completeness on questions. I offer Independent School Entrance Exam prep, specializing in math and test taking tips and strategies for this unique, timed test. In addition to reviewing the most-tested math concepts, the quantitative comparisons in the math section of the ISEE are unfamiliar to most students, so a particular concentration on these is included. My expertise in standardized test prep and successful math tutoring methods will ensure readiness and confidence for the ISEE student.
Physical science covers a variety of disciplines - offering an introduction to chemistry, physics, and may add elements of earth science/geology and astronomy among others. It is also usually the start of the scientific method - with detailed, methodical experiments. My background in science (PhD in chemistry) qualifies me in science, but my ability to relate to students of all levels makes me a good tutor. Please read the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for your student.
Whether you need just a refresher or remedial help for the Praxis Test, I am prepared to help. My expertise and successes in standardized test preparation, with focus on math skills, can help you quickly get up to speed. With years of experience working with students, and mastery of the content, I can quickly identify weaknesses, and efficiently work with you to overcome them. The secret? Showing you how to break the problems down into their easiest components, and then take them one step at a time. Worried about not being able to use your calculator? I can not only show you ways to easily estimate answers, but I can show you short cuts to lengthy calculations. I have helped many students gain confidence and ability to get the results they need on the math portion of this test. In addition to specialized concentration in math, as an advanced degree holder myself, I can help you organize your study and review your work for the other components of this exam. Please take a moment to look through my clients' reviews. I look forward to helping you too!
I have had much success helping students through pre-algebra. At this point in the math curriculum, the fundamentals to algebra are being introduced, as well as the beginning concepts in geometry. Being strong in these areas will set the stage for a good high school math experience.
It is important to address any difficulties before discouragement sets in. I have been told I can explain math concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. For grades that are weak or inconsistent, it is usually a combination of one or more of a few things: the new concepts may simply be difficult or not presented in a way the student cannot connect with; and any weaknesses in arithmetic (working with fractions or decimals, for example) are magnified as the course moves on from building the foundational skills to using those skills. I can help on both fronts.

I have helped many students achieve high scores on the math portion of the PSAT. Students who do not prepare are in danger of underperforming because: 1) they are not familiar with the question types and answer formats on the test, which can be quite different from school exams; 2) they are not used to the accuracy required for questions where there is no partial credit given; 3) they can be fazed by the fast paced, timed aspect of the test. I can help on all these fronts. We review all the math required for the test, as well as test taking tips and strategies. Please see the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for your student.
At the end of the year, students are under much pressure, and reviewing the content of an entire year of class material can be daunting. Furthermore, sections that a student was weaker on when first covered won't get much easier without targeted help. Often small clarifications or just being shown a concept in a different way can help greatly. With a strong background in algebra 1,2 (with trig) and geometry, I can help students successfully prepare for Math Regents exams.
I have helped many students prepare and raise their score on the math portion of the SAT. I concentrate on raising both skill and confidence for these tests - mostly by concentrating on the fundamental skills needed to answer the questions. I teach a method by which students can decipher the head-spinning word problems on the test, and make it easy to understand exactly what is being asked. Rather than just helping students solve any particular math problem, I always have my eye out for how the student is thinking, and where their difficulties are, allowing me to identify, and efficiently address, any underlying weaknesses. I have been told I can explain math concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We also discuss the timing of the test, and strategies to maximize your score. Please take a look at the reviews clients have left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you.
I have had much success preparing students for the SSAT. I have been told, that with a patient manner, I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We review the foundational math concepts appropriate to the level test the student is taking. Depending on their grade and math background, some students may not yet have learned some of the required math for that level, and that can be unnerving! For most students, I can quickly introduce those concepts in a way that is immediately applicable. Additionally, students taking the Upper Level test sometimes need direction simplifying problems, as they are not allowed to use a calculator on the test, and some are not used to that restriction. Whatever the level, in addition to strengthening math skills, we review test taking strategies to maximize your score. Please take a look at the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you.
With a Ph.D. in chemistry, I have done a lot of studying! The adage - "study smarter, not harder" is certainly true, and I can show you how. With a relaxed style and good rapport, I can help you organize your tasks, make a timeline, glean more from your reading, and strengthen your understanding. Please take a moment to look at the reviews clients have left for me to see if I would be a good fit for you.
The Test of Essential Academic Skills is used for admission to many nursing schools. It covers reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. My main concentration is on the math section of the TEAS. Brushing up on math skills is essential for most test takers. Since a calculator is not permitted on this timed test, many students feel added pressure. I can help with strategies and skill building to help you arrive at the answers you need without relying on your calculator. In addition, I can identify your strengths and weaknesses in math to help you develop a plan to maximize your score. I have had extensive experience tutoring standardized math test preparation, and have helped many students. In addition, I hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and can help you work through test preparation materials in the science section as well.
