After graduating from Indiana University with a BA, Individualized Major Program in Music and Computer Science, my work experience has encompassed everything from designing laser light effects for film and television, rock 'n roll shows (including the late Michael Jackson, Madonna and Pink Floyd), to working at Paramount Pictures as a software developer, to being an entrepreneur several times; I designed the first hand-held surgical laser made in China; I also invented MagneBlocks, an award-winning geometrical / educational toy that was carried at Toys 'R Us, Target, and 12 countries, and voted one of the top 10 toys of the year by NBC's "The Today Show".
My professional experience has included the life lessons from working with a wide range of people, with a wide range of abilities. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began learning Adobe in the early 1990's after cutting my teeth on Harvard Graphics, then Corel Draw, which was a very good vector image authoring suite, similar in scope, but less expensive than Adobe, and it worked on the IBM! But as my skill grew, and my needs evolved, I took the plunge and bought Photoshop and Illustrator.
I took courses in NYC, studying with Lynda (Weinman, of Lynda dot com, who is a GREAT instructor, BTW) on the entire Adobe Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and now Flash, Dreamweaver..I know 'em all!); Illustrator is a very sophisticated vector image editing program, versus Photoshop, which is primarily a raster image editor. These two products are largely becoming one, "with two faces," because there are many features and interface processes that align well between raster and vector image editing, so this is a logical, expected evolution. I learned some nifty tricks in these classes, which I used in subsequent projects.
Some of the projects I have done include extensive websites. I also did my CD cover art, flyers, and all sorts of various printed media, including playing cards, fabric banners and large format output.
I have been a Photoshop user for nearly 20 years. I first used it at Paramount Pictures Television to create graphics for the studio, and on several Star Trek projects (I got to work with Mike Okuda, Star Trek: TNG's production designer a few times!) Then while producing Sony PlayStation games, I used Photoshop to create game images for the user guides, promotional flyers/ brochures, and manipulate screen shots. As a web developer for Pfizer Corporate Communications, I received Photoshop certification, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Flash certification (basically the entire Creative Suite before it was the creative suite). I also had the good fortune to have Lynda Weinman as an instructor. Running my own marketing company for my toy invention Magneblocks, I used Photoshop to create the product packaging graphics, website graphics, instruction guides, marketing communications content, and maintaining a media library of over 10,000 product photos (source photos to edited/ composited/ variable resolutions in multiple digital asset formats incl. *.psd, *.ai, *.jpg, *.mov, *.mp4, *.avi, *.wmf,..). Finally, we use Photoshop to manage our family photo library from multiple digital camera inputs as well.
I am a certified High School Math Teacher, and my student teaching was in Algebra 1 & 2. Although I have never worked full-time as a teacher (I currently work in IT), I have done quite a bit of Algebra 2 tutoring (10 students in 2 years), with good results as my profile indicates.

Currently, I work as an IT Project/ Program Manager Consultant to Fortune 500 firms. My latest assignment was with Pepsico on their global HCM migration, to SAP/Success Factors "Employee Central" HR/ ERP cloud application (website implementation, legacy database integration, and custom application development). Working with the HR Operations Team as Project Manager, doing typical PM tasks like business systems analysis, create the project plan, design numerous data trackers, status reports, and training presentations, and provide strategic analysis to the PMO and executive team.
I began my journey with computers in high school math (there were no school computers then!), learning about the BASIC programming language. In college, I started as a Comp. Sci. major (ending w/ a minor). I learned Fortran, Assembly, C, Unix, Computing Hardware (microprocessors), and more.
My first computing job was as a tech, repairing IBM, clones, & Apple computers. I built custom computers using various motherboards & power supplies, etc. I even built custom ISA I/O boards.

During my undergrad program in Physics, Computer Science and Music, I studied, then tutored Calculus, which requires a solid understanding of analytical geometry. During the first part of my career, I was an electro-optical engineer, working on laser systems (designing the first hand-held surgical laser made in China for the US Market), and optics requires a solid fundamental knowledge of Geometry. I began working on Apple products as a computer repair tech back in 1986, working on Apple II's and the very first MacIntoshes. Later, I would work for Mark Wozniak, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's brother. I have used every version of Macintosh since HFS, and currently own 3 types (Powerbook, G4 and iMac). I have worked with all Mac software, including Mac versions of Microsoft Office as well as their native Mac competitors (Pages, Keynote, etc.) I have used the Mac professionally, working with ProTools audio system for the Mac, and the Adobe Creative Suite. I have used Access since it was released around 1992. I have programmed macros, as well as used VBA to code functionality. I can use the GUI to make Tables, Queries, and reports; I can use the Schema Editor to make ER diagrams; I can then use the Access-generated SQL (which I then modify to meet the ANSI SQL standard, so that the SQL can be used with Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL databases). I can set up and then point to ODBC data sources; I can import and export data to and from CSV, Excel, or other parsed file types. I can also use the Form Builder to make reports.
After graduating with a computer science degree in ancient languages (Fortran, Forth, Assembler, Pascal), I worked my first corporate IT job at Paramount Television, writing database software for Nielsen ratings analysis, which included migrating a DBIII application into the nascent Excel (using their macro language - until VB came out and I used that). So I've used Excel, and taught corporate professionals how to use it for 20 years. I even "converted" a bunch of die-hard Lotus 1-2-3 for the IBM PC users into Win/Excel.
More currently, I have been using Excel every day for just about anything and everything: Reports; Data Analysis (and the Stats add-in); import/export (data translation); using conditional formatting, data validation, formulas, graphics (clip art, shapes, etc.), and cell/worksheet protection (password protection).

I began using MS Project in 1996 as an executive producer of videogame software, managing software development of five projects, and Project was an incredibly useful tool that I learned on my own. Throughout my career, whatever my title, involved project management in some form or another: 'Waterfall' SDLC or 'Stage Gate' product management methodologies. Project was also useful in responding to RFP's, using its Gantt chart interface to help create projections and cost/resource estimates.
In my current position as Program Manager, I use Project 2010 daily: I have an active Project file for each implementation I am working on (currently I maintain 2 six-figure projects). I utilize the basic task/resource features; I create custom views, add custom fields, compare auto-scheduled baseline dates against actuals, add & cost resources, and exporting (to XML for Salesforce.com integration, and to PDF for reporting to clients without Project).
I began my study of music theory in piano lessons when I was 6. In high school, I studied music theory with jazz drumming legend Buddy Rich's band arranger, Bill Channon, who began with 4-part chorale signing & theory (the traditional "bass/tenor/alto/soprano voicing");
All the while, I was studying classical piano, and played in a jazz-rock band (it was the '70s), which really developed my ear (there's nothing better than picking out songs from a 33 1/3 LP (except using a CD or MP3 - kids today are so enabled with music technology!) I studied classical piano, so sight reading naturally develops the more you do it. I studied Jazz piano and theory at Indiana University (with jazz educator legend David N. Baker), and I know harmony to the 15th part (2 octaves), so I can play a "C#7 #9 b13," and tell you why it resolves to an F#Major 9.
If I had been born with a good instrument, I would have been on American Idol (I'm a little old for that now..), because I love music, and any program that promotes live musicians playing & singing can't be all bad. After 10 years in Los Angeles, trying to be a film scoring rock star - getting close a few times, having recorded with a trendy band you never heard of ("Pleasure Mask"), to releasing my own CD 'Astral Waves'), among other adventures - I decided that I love music, but not the music business. I have studied piano since age 6. After the typical elementary years with a local teacher, learning the basic beginning classical repertoire, I studied music at Simsbury High School under William Channon, who was an arranger with Buddy Rich. Relocating my junior year of high school, I entered Kentucky Weslyan College's music conservatory as a pre-baccalaureate piano student. I began to play professionally at the age of 16, working with area bands, notably with 'Rainbow Warrior' a group from Florida who was Lynyrd Skynyrd's opening act. Attending Indiana University, I studied jazz under the famous David Baker, studying piano with Terry Eder and Jim Beard.
After receiving a BA in Music and Computer Science, I moved to Los Angeles, and studied piano with Larry Carlton keyboardist Terry Trotter, and Frank Zappa sideman Tommy Mars. I performed with Sonia Gaia recording artist Jesse Allen Cooper, recorded on Jesse's second album 'A Moment in Time'. In 2003, I released a CD of original keyboard compositions, Astral Waves. I have taught piano privately for over 10 years, and at CT locations including The Music Learning Center, Danbury; Ridgefield Music, Ridgefield; Norwalk Music, Norwalk, Chuck's Music, Brookfield. I currently play with Sgt. Lefferts Phoney Hearts Club Band, a Beatles tribute band, and I am working on my second CD, a collection of original modern jazz compositions.
The change from elementary school math to Middle (Secondary)) School math can seem like a frightening prospect to many students, and so it is important to manage this transition carefully for the best results. A Math and Computer Science undergrad degree, I did software development for 15 years, then went back to college to get a second Bachelors in Math so I could get a Mathematics Teaching Certificate - secondary school. Although I have the certification, software pays better, so I only tutor math on the side.
Note: I tutored calculus back in my undergrad years, and have done so for the past 3 years. I also studied physics, and worked with lasers for the first part of my career as an electro-optic engineer, so I know practical applications of math & calculus. And calculus is nothing more than Trigonometry, which is really just Geometry and Algebra, so I understand how to build foundations that will last a lifetime, and hopefully instill an interest (if not passion) for math.

As a certified High School Math Teacher, I know the typical subject requirements of school, but that is just the beginning of the topic! Trigonometry is foundational for Calculus and Physics, and understanding these connections are vital to understanding the mathematics. Throughout my career, trigonometry has been a handy skill which I've used to solve a wide variety of engineering challenges in electro-optics, computing (videogaming and finance) and sound design.
In college physics, especially acoustics, trig is the primary tool for modeling sound waves, which is demonstrated with the additive synthesizer. As a performing keyboardist with such an instrument (a Moog synth!), I can show students how sound is created, and how mathematics describes the sound.
Light (and the science of Optics) also uses trig, and I began my career as a laser engineer, so this is another discipline I can utilize to base the mathematics on. In fact, one reason I love Trig is because it not only describes phenomenon I love (such as music and 'light'), but can be used to predict results, create beautiful geometries, and expand one's consciousness.
Trig has allowed me to solve many problems in my personal and professional life, such as calculating the brightness of light (laser beam), or setting the sensitivity of the steering wheel in a PlayStation game I produced, or calculating a rate problem for my wife's MBA project.
