I taught high school English at Brien McMahon H.S. in Norwalk for over thirty-three years and have a BA and MA in English. I also have twenty-eight years’ experience in SAT prep as the owner of my own SAT tutoring company that held classes throughout Fairfield County. I have taken and studied the verbal and writing sections of over 70 different SATs and PSATs. The parents of over 6,000 juniors and seniors enrolled their sons/daughters in my program.

In addition to test-taking strategies for the verbal sections, I can also share strategies for math so that students can optimize their math SAT scores simply by knowing about the scoring system, pacing, and where the easy-middle difficulty-hard-hardest questions are.

My tutoring style is casual but serious. If I ask a student to complete two or three 25 min. sections between sessions, I will expect that all or most of the work will have been done; otherwise, we are wasting each other’s time.

I have prepared hundreds of juniors and seniors for the Essay section of the SAT; the SAT Writing section also contains grammar questions that repeated check the same grammatical rules again and again, from test to test. The sentences are different, the same 30 or so rules are the same.

Grammar

Knowledgeable in all aspects of standard written English as tested on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT.

Spanish

I went off to college with four years of high school Spanish planning to major in it and to teach Spanish on the high school level. My plans changed, I switched majors to English, and taught English for thirty-eight years.

I kept up with Spanish, using it with my Spanish-speaking students in the Norwalk Public Schools at Brien McMahon High School.

Writing

I have taught essay writing for thirty-eight years, from 1972 - 2010, during my tenure as a full-time high school Teacher of English.

English

Both my bachelor and masters degrees are in English, not in Education. I have taught high school English for thirty-eight years.

Literature

I have taught 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English curriculum and am conversant with the plots, characterizations, and themes of numerous novels, plays, etc., that high school students are assigned.

Proofreading

I have edited two books currently available for purchase on Amazon.com: "The Reluctant Revolutionary" and "Unpardonable Crimes: The Legacy of Fidel Castro," both written by Celestino Heres, Ph.D.

GED

I recently worked with a foreign student on the grammar and essay writing part of the GED. I can also help you with the basic math, science, and social studies sections so that you'll feel confident when you sit for the GED exam.

SAT Reading

I have created my own test-taking strategies for the Critical Reading sections of the PSAT and SAT.

I have prepared hundreds of juniors and seniors for the 25 minute Essay section, always Section 1, of the SAT; the SAT Writing section also contains grammar questions that repeated check the same grammatical rules again and again, from test to test. The sentences are different, the same 30 or so grammatical rules are the same and, with practice can easily be mastered.

I have had ten years' experience preparing high school juniors for the PSAT via my own PSAT/SAT preparation program that ran from 1981 to 2009 in Fairfield County.
