The main differences between working with 7th grade and older students, vs. K-6, is that the younger children are very literally-minded. They don't conceptualize abstractions well, so concrete examples, hands-on activities, and lots of pictures are needed.
Extra patience and incorporating fun and active games to get the little wigglers up and around can be helpful, too.

I don't accept the supposition that either whole language reading comprehension, or phonics based decoding, is appropriate for all students all of the time. A phonics based approach is appropriate for some students.
