I am a retired photographer, small businessman, and Fortune 100 district manager who welcomes the opportunity to assist students in sharpening their written and verbal English skills. My writing style is crisp, precise, and clear. I know the rules of grammar and can explain the logic behind them. In my own school years, I remember the confusion and complexity of trying to learn all the rules of grammar. It was not until I took Latin and French as a high school student that the English grammar rules began to fall into place and make sense. If you seek an individual with patience, competence, and maturity, you will be very satisfied with my abilities to clarify and sharpen your English skills. I will be happy to help!
My approach with anyone seeking assistance in improving his writing skill will be one of first carefully analyzing the present English skill level of the student. This assessment will be non-judgemental and my best effort in understanding where the opportunities lie for improvement. Once the assessment is made and the results have been shared with the student, we will work as a team to improve English skills using an approach that teaches the "whys" of the rules of English. Rather than relying on wrote memorization, we will work together to build skills using an approach based on fundamental understanding of English principles.
I possess an excellent working knowledge of basic and intermediate algebra, along with a strong background in basic math. I still have my algebra books from high school and have used them through the years in my engineering and Master of Business Administration studies. Math has always fascinated me, and I seem to enjoy finding applications for my math skills in my stock market analysis and woodworking projects. Patience is one of my strongest attributes in tutoring my students. I try to help them learn to look at their math problems and resultant answers from a "reasonableness" perspective - does the answer make sense? If I can get a student to get beyond the "plug and chug" stage, then there's usually a breakthrough to real understanding.
Having served as an officer in the navy, I am well aware of the generalist skills required for military duty. The ASVAB is a test to assess the generalist skills of the candidate. My ability to teach basic analytical skills and the "why's" of various subjects will resonate with your student, studying for this exam. Please allow me to assist.
The ability to comprehend, write, and speak English competently is the single biggest factor in academic success. Without strength in this area, the study of all other subjects presents far greater challenges than would otherwise be the case. My career as a naval officer, small businessman, and Fortune 100 District Manager has given me countless opportunities to express myself verbally and in writing. Without my English skills, I would not have enjoyed the success that I achieved. Now that I am comfortably retired, I would welcome the opportunity to help others attain higher levels of competencies in their core subjects.
I earned a high school diploma, an undergraduate degree, and a master's degree. I am a patient and articulate teacher. With regard to my basic math skills, I am very proficient in percentages, word problems, interest calculations, plane geometry, ratios, decimals, scientific notation, and basic calculations. I know the rules of grammar and sentence structure, and I possess a large vocabulary.
Reading skills (and the writing skills that accrue from good reading skills) are essential for all who wish to be successful in the workplace and informed of the world in which we live. I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, and Barrons weekly business newspaper. I am also a daily subscriber to Dictionary.com and have saved the Word of the Day for more than five years into my smartphone, creating a highly portable dictionary of new and unfamiliar vocabulary words. I pride myself in my written English skills, public speaking ability, and vocabulary. Please allow me to assist you in improving your reading and English comprehension skills--the most important skills you need to be successful in the world in which we live!
I pride myself on my written English skills. My Latin and French courses in high school and college helped me tremendously to understand the intricacies and irregularities of the English language. My ability to construct clearly written documents using my language skills has been as asset to me in the military and the world of business. I am a daily reader of the Wall Street Journal, and I subscribe to dictionary.com which gives me a new vocabulary word every day. I stand ready to assist you in sharpening your compositional skills and to understand more clearly the mechanics of English usage.
