My name is Cynthia D. Here's a little bit about myself... I just moved from Virginia to Colorado. I am originally from Lebanon. Right now, I am enrolled in an online program for translation- Arabic
at New York University. At the same time, I would like to find a teaching job, because I enjoy it and ... I need it! :)
In Virginia, I worked as an Arabic instructor for over 2 years and 9 months in a private language
institute that was contracted with the government. I taught government and private students -often individually- Modern Standard and Levantine Arabic at levels ranging from 0 to 4. I developed individualized curricula for my students and trained them for FSI, DLPT and OPI tests. I also conducted and evaluated FSI-format tests in Levantine and Modern Standard Arabic. In addition, I developed translation testing material, and evaluated Arabic to English translations. After thorough training in advanced teaching methodology (communicative approach), advanced speaking, listening and reading
, FSI and DLPT tests, I received a tester certification.
Also in Virginia, I worked for an NGO, in a program for survivors of torture and trauma, as a French
and Arabic translator and interpreter in legal, social, psychiatric and psychological settings.
I have a Certificate of Advanced English Proficiency from Georgetown University. Right before I came to the States, I earned my B.S. in Nutrition
In addition to Lebanon, I have traveled to Egypt, Jordan, Syria, France and Monaco.
Alright now the fun stuff... I love languages and I truly enjoy teaching. But I also think of it as a serious responsibility to make full use of the student's money, time and energy. Therefore, I am committed to my student's progress. The student has the right to professional, honest and productive instruction. I have an interactive student-based teaching approach. My students tell me I am clear, patient and positive. I realize learning a language can be challenging and therefore frustrating. That's why I incorporate creative techniques and interesting activities that target the student's needs and help him/her practice new concepts. I always welcome and even ask for constructive criticism from my students. Why? Well, because after all, my students' well-being is necessary for their progress.
