Hello all! I am a former school teacher with six years experience at the high school level, including AP World History. I have held teaching certifications in Illinois and Arizona.

Let me get right to the point and explain why I think I can help you with your history knowledge --- I LOVE history!

When I hear that a student thinks history is boring I realize that the student has not had a proper introduction to the subject. History is life! Literally. Everything that is fascinating, everything that is beautiful, everything that is instructive happened within the confines of history. If you love hearing stories of valor, stories of love, stories of adventure (and who doesn't?) then history contains something for you.

Let me introduce you to the romance of history as seen through my eyes. It may sound corny, but I think I can make history come alive for you as I did for many of my former students. Hope to hear from you soon!

UPDATE: In 2013 I began taking courses at CU Boulder in the Classics Department. As of this writing, I have completed one full year of Ancient Greek (language) and nearly completed a full year of Latin. In addition I have taken courses on Roman architecture during the period of Augustus, and Greek and Roman Epic. My hope is to attain a Master's Degree in Classical Studies and thus satisfy a lifelong love of the Greco-Roman world.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught US History for a total of five years over a seven year period of high school teaching. I have an MA in History from Northern Illinois University. I also tutored two students via Wyzant in US History. One, a high school student for over the course of one and a half semesters. The other was a recently arrived immigrant who wanted to learn more about her adopted country.

English

I LOVE to read and love to encourage young people to discover the worlds contained within books. As a former history teacher, reading and writing were essential aspects of my pedagogy. I did not shy away from assigning many and challenging readings and essays to my students, even considering the post-literate age of ours.

When students struggled at times, I was always on hand to assist them with comprehension. In a classroom setting this is sometimes challenging. Thus, I am excited for the opportunity to tutor on a one-on-one basis via Wyzant.

European History

I taught both regular and AP World History for seven years. European history falls under the purview of my classes. In addition, I emphasized key elements of European history in my classes such as the Italian Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. Finally, I have been an enthusiast of European history throughout my life and have studied it for leisure.

Geography

I am a former high school history teacher who taught World Geography as a separate class and also incorporated geography in my World History classes. We covered every continent.

Familiarization with countries and regions was achieved both the old fashioned way (blank maps, etc), and unconventionally as well. I played music from around the world (Indian ragas, West African percussion based chants, traditional Vietnamese folk music), had ethnic restaurants cater to my classes (Italian, Indian) and showed both subtitled films and travel guide based videos (Lonely Planet, etc).

Social Studies

I taught various History subjects over the course of seven years. Specifically, World History, AP World History, US History, and World Geography. Combined, these course provide me with a solid grounding for middle school Social Studies.

World History

World History is my bread and butter. From Alexander the Great to Mother Theresa, from Julius Caesar to Gandhi, from Muhammad to Lawrence of Arabia, history is filled with fascinating personalities. People who lived life to the fullest, who demonstrated great courage, audacity, compassion, and yes, sometimes cruelty. When we open the pages of history, we come face to face with all that is most noble and most regretful in the human story.

Writing

I have been an avid reader and writer since I was very young. I would compose stories for fun. In high school I wrote a short story that received an honorable mention in a Chicago newspaper. Also, I have graded countless essays and papers as a former history school teacher. I enjoy the opportunity to help students express their ideas clearly and succinctly.
