I taught US History for a total of five years over a seven year period of high school teaching. I have an MA in History from Northern Illinois University. I also tutored two students via Wyzant in US History. One, a high school student for over the course of one and a half semesters. The other was a recently arrived immigrant who wanted to learn more about her adopted country.
I LOVE to read and love to encourage young people to discover the worlds contained within books. As a former history teacher, reading and writing were essential aspects of my pedagogy. I did not shy away from assigning many and challenging readings and essays to my students, even considering the post-literate age of ours.
When students struggled at times, I was always on hand to assist them with comprehension. In a classroom setting this is sometimes challenging. Thus, I am excited for the opportunity to tutor on a one-on-one basis via Wyzant.
I taught both regular and AP World History for seven years. European history falls under the purview of my classes. In addition, I emphasized key elements of European history in my classes such as the Italian Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. Finally, I have been an enthusiast of European history throughout my life and have studied it for leisure.
I am a former high school history teacher who taught World Geography as a separate class and also incorporated geography in my World History classes. We covered every continent.
Familiarization with countries and regions was achieved both the old fashioned way (blank maps, etc), and unconventionally as well. I played music from around the world (Indian ragas, West African percussion based chants, traditional Vietnamese folk music), had ethnic restaurants cater to my classes (Italian, Indian) and showed both subtitled films and travel guide based videos (Lonely Planet, etc).

World History is my bread and butter. From Alexander the Great to Mother Theresa, from Julius Caesar to Gandhi, from Muhammad to Lawrence of Arabia, history is filled with fascinating personalities. People who lived life to the fullest, who demonstrated great courage, audacity, compassion, and yes, sometimes cruelty. When we open the pages of history, we come face to face with all that is most noble and most regretful in the human story.
I have been an avid reader and writer since I was very young. I would compose stories for fun. In high school I wrote a short story that received an honorable mention in a Chicago newspaper. Also, I have graded countless essays and papers as a former history school teacher. I enjoy the opportunity to help students express their ideas clearly and succinctly.
