Hello, I'm Adrian. How can I help with your creative needs? I have a BFA from Missouri State University and have worked in the field as a professional designer. After some time in the market I found that studio work and instruction were rewarding endeavors and now primarily occupy myself with freelance projects. I am well versed in the foundation studio arts, especially drawing. Life drawing, especially the figure, is where I excel. I experiment with various media, techniques, and drawing surfaces to push the limits of the discipline. Drawing is an indispensable tool for the artist. It is usually the method by which any idea is first given visual form.

I teach composition as it applies to visual and three dimensional design. Technique must be supported by a sound compositional structure. This is where history comes in. Awareness and understanding of artistic movements, principles, ideas, and the historical context that shaped them is invaluable the creative. Art does not exist in a vacuum, it is a reflection of its surroundings. The history can be difficult to absorb, as it is so often presented in a boring and dry manner. I make it relevant and understandable. Igniting interest in the subject is the best way to make sure that it is retained.

What makes art so interesting and yet difficult is its subjective nature. There is no 2+2=4. There is no right or wrong. Everything is open to interpretation, and what one audience praises another will pan. Versatility is key to success. To see the problem from many viewpoints is to have a richer understanding and better chance to create something beautiful. I hope to help you do just that.

Thanks for reading.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

As a designer one must be aware of the movements of the past and influences on present day work. Clients frequently call upon us for a certain "look" such as Art Deco, Art Nouveau, or Pop art. Knowing history clears the way for originality. The art is only part of the story. Painting, sculpture, and architecture are constantly shaped not only by the whims of the artist, but by the society and conditions in which they are conceived.

Art Theory

Art is as much about the mind as it is about the eye. Knowing how to see is as important as what you see. I show that creation of art is only part of the puzzle; reasoning and philosophy play large roles here. One must be able to puzzle out an appropriate visual solution given many variables.

Drawing

In earning my BFA in Graphic design/Illustration I focused heavily on drawing; taking and excelling in every advanced course offered. I believe that drawing is the cornerstone of visual art and the foundation upon which other mediums are expanded. I make it less intimidating by giving the student mental and visual tools by which to see and edit the model. A logical progression from minimal gesture representation to increasing awareness and inclusion of values, balance, and detail are part of my didactic style.

Awesome Tutor — Adrian has been doing a great job teaching my daughter art and has a lovely balance of patience, knowledge, and instruction. She is learning real art techniques at a young age and the vocabulary to match. She finds her lessons fun and relaxing and is building a very solid foundation. ...
