All of Sharon’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Sharon’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Dyslexia

A large part of my current job has been to identify students with dyslexia. I use the standardized assessments. The Woodcock-Johnson III is one assessment that I use to diagnose and progress monitor students. All of my students over the years have learning disabilities to some degree. I use phonemic awareness, reading strategies and phonics instruction to help students improve their reading skills.

Phonics

I have been trained in several phonics instructional methods including: Linda-Mood Bell, Wilson, Rewards, LANGUAGE!, and LTRS. I have used each of these methods in teaching students that struggle with reading. I use assessments to determine the best method to use and I assess regularly to check for student understanding as well as to help improve my instruction.

Reading

I have taught reading for 17 years. I am very eclectic, I use a variety of comprehension and phonics strategies to help students master reading. My students have consistently shown growth on the state achievement test.

Special Needs

I have a Master's degree in Special Education. I have taught Special Education reading classes for 17 years. My students show growth on the state achievement test every year.

Study Skills

I have taught writing for the past three to four years. The curriculum I used provided tools for me to use to teach students all stages of writing; from the planning stage to the revision and rewrite stage. The students enjoyed learning to write with this curriculum because it provided them with a structured way to complete writing assignments; not only in my class but all classes that required them to write.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
