My daughter's confidence in her reading has greatly increased and she has improved a lot already! Sharon is very patient and my daughter looks forward to her tutoring lessons!
Sharon is very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. Our son gets easily distracted, Sharon helps keep him on task and focused. Our son has always had a struggle with writing and grammar and is now at a point where he now struggles in his other classes. Sharon is working with our son to understand grammar and writing so he can be successful in middle school. Sharon focuses on an area at a time and once the concept is grasped moves to the next. Thank you Sharon for all that you do!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
A large part of my current job has been to identify students with dyslexia. I use the standardized assessments. The Woodcock-Johnson III is one assessment that I use to diagnose and progress monitor students. All of my students over the years have learning disabilities to some degree. I use phonemic awareness, reading strategies and phonics instruction to help students improve their reading skills.
I have been trained in several phonics instructional methods including: Linda-Mood Bell, Wilson, Rewards, LANGUAGE!, and LTRS. I have used each of these methods in teaching students that struggle with reading. I use assessments to determine the best method to use and I assess regularly to check for student understanding as well as to help improve my instruction.
I have taught reading for 17 years. I am very eclectic, I use a variety of comprehension and phonics strategies to help students master reading. My students have consistently shown growth on the state achievement test.
I have a Master's degree in Special Education. I have taught Special Education reading classes for 17 years. My students show growth on the state achievement test every year.
I have taught writing for the past three to four years. The curriculum I used provided tools for me to use to teach students all stages of writing; from the planning stage to the revision and rewrite stage. The students enjoyed learning to write with this curriculum because it provided them with a structured way to complete writing assignments; not only in my class but all classes that required them to write.
